End of The Tether
« on: May 08, 2023, 04:10:09 PM »
On the Stunthangar Hangout recently Keith Trostle read some wonderful words about control line flying. It inspired me to put a few ideas rattling around in my head on paper.

                                                                  THE END OF THE TETHER

They say "Some folks never grow up."

Old dogs and new tricks? Nup!

"You got nothing better to do?" Ask the foolish.

"Grumpy old buggers playing with toys? That's simply ghoulish!"

But they will never know what we do.

The joy of messing with caster, dope and glue.

                                                                 The building, trimming flying

                                                                      the refining of a skill.

The smell of nitro, and ether

                                                                    the adrenalin , the thrill.

Old men with toys you say! I challenge you to watch and stay!

And if you do watch our game , you my friend will not be the same.

You might begin to understand, what seems simple is much more grand.

Every aspect is more complex, deep and mysterious, it is a hex.

So what appears childish, what looks merely like fun

On every level is much more than the sum

The parts, there are many, designing, building, flying, tuning engines ...the list never ends.

The mental, social and physical activity , and most of all _ the friends.

When we're in the circle's centre at the end of our tether,

                                                                            Simply put

It's pure bliss when it all comes together!

You have put to words what we all feel.  Reminds me of a line from The Legend of Bagger Vance - "It is a game that can't be won, only played."

John,

You certainly have a way with words.....excellant job, and so accurate on the full
meaning of modeling, and specifically controline flying.

Cheers.

Ha.
Very true Air Ministry.
I will only say …. The spirit should always be larger than its vessel.
The spirit of CL to me stretches beyond the horizon, because others have taken it there.

Ah.....the unstoppable Sam Hunt.
Good to see is still writing, although I have have memories of his earlier, powerful work. The way he spat out and derged on with his poetry was a sight to behold.

That tyre, the famous Dunlop racing tyre from the 1970s. Had one on the front of my modified 74 Yamaha RD 350 and bloody needed it. n1 Ahhhhh..those were the days!
