Title: Electric starter tip.
Post by: frank mccune on May 19, 2020, 09:03:32 AM
        Hello All:

I stated in a previous post that my new 14.8 volt starter would hurl the starter cone very far.  I replaced the starter cone with a NEW Sullivan .  End of problem!  When I told my friend about this, he was not surprised as he informed that they shrink with age!   I did not know that! Lol  Try a new cone for a change,

                                                                                           Good luck,

                                                                                           Frank McCune

Some things do.  Not so for the Jive Combat Team.

Mine runs on 18v., John. Surely you've seen it. Makita battery packs...came with a nice drill and charger. It's the bee's knees!  y1 Steve

  Thanks Steve ,
Sometimes I have to be told to use my imagination.  12 volts just doesn't do what I ask.

Yes ,   Stalker .81 again it starts fine but lots of times it kicks back & runs in reverse. After I kill it it wont start. I have added several head shims & it's a lot better. But the electric starter will not allow it to kick back.

     Hello John:

My setup is very similar to Richard’s.  The battery is a four cell Li po .  The new cone was a  very tight press fit when it was inserted into the cone of the starter.  Perhaps I can wrap a piece of high friction tape around the old cones to salvage them.

I needed the extra voltage to start my tight abc engine and a .40 Diesel that I fly in warm  weather.

                                                                                                           Good  luck,

Adding shims to fix starting problems is not a good thing.
Perhaps your plug is glowing too bright and causing too early ignition?
Try adjusting that to red-dark orange.
Normally starters are not necessary with those engines. L

  Lauri,
  Try a cooler plug?

No John, in general those engines like hotter plugs. And one really should not alter the running parameters in order to facilitate starting. You should be able to adjust the glow power, to make the plug glow not so strong. So you’d need some sort of a power panel, or put a resistor  between battery and cable. At simplest it can be a coil spring and an alligator clip to make it adjustable. L

  That makes sense.
