Electric fly-in pictures
« on: May 28, 2006, 09:42:40 PM »
We staged our first annual electric fun fly today at R.C.C.D.
We had 30 registered pilots who brought out over a hundred planes between them.
Naturally they were all r/c except for mine and Rick Sawicki's electric Smoothies.
Off and on during the day the r/c planes were grounded and Rick and I flew our Smoothies. We each got at either end of the field and put up simultanious flights. We both flew the whole pattern with no changes except we skipped all the level laps. So our planes were constantly stunting. We both had the timers set for six minutes and our pitmen hit the switch at the same time. So our flights started and ended within seconds of one another.
It was way cool and everytime we flew we'd get standing ovations from the crowd. It was all very excillerating.
I'm only posting two pictures. The first one is Rick and I with our Smoothies. Please notice how huge and well cut our field is in the background.
Picture #2 is of the food concession (very important you know) which is run by the ladies auxilliary.

Next Saturday June 3rd all r/c planes will be grounded for the day and we will be running our second annual Greater Detroit Stunt Contest. Last years event went very well and this years contest will be even better. I got some great trophies to award first thru third. If you can make it come on out, you won't be disappointed.

Roger, you're going to have a good time with your electric. Please keep us all posted on it as you go along.

Thanks for the comps on our club field and the c/l promo approach.

Pictures are great.  Wish it wasn't so far from here to there.  Also you stated you did not do level laps.  Isn't 6 minutes more than enough for the pattern?  Of course I realize from past demos I used to put on the crowd loved consectitive maneuvers.  Nothing like flying a full tank of fuel without moving.  Later,  DOC Holliday

Doc,   I think you'd like our field....It's very nice....too bad we're so far away.

Yes 6 mins. is lots of time to fly the pattern. After the clovers we just started flying lazy eights, overheads, etc.........our main goal was to show how agile and close c/l flying can be.
I think we managed that pretty well.

This coming Saturday we.re holding oue 2nd annual stunt contest and we're using the r/c field. All it takes nowadays to get some c/l flyers out there is an email the day before.
As a rule the clubs policy is that if a person flys there a few times they should join or move on-BUT-that has been waived for our side of the road (C/L is on one side and R/C is on the other). It's easy to find places to fly control line and the club knows it and they are very open to having us present and attracting other c/l flyers out to our club.
It's all good.
The electric fly-in was a first out there and we managed to fly both c/l and r/c. The electric aspect gave us all common ground.
At the end of July our club is hosting an AMA sponsored District 7 Fly-In, and once again C/L and R/C guys will be sharing the sky. And the best part of it is the AMA is buying everyone dinner.

ME AGAIN----I'm kind of the clubs un-official photographer in that I take a lot of pictures.
So I figured I'd add a couple more here.

At the electric fly in a foamie midair crashed into a pattern plane. It looked like just a tick as both planes stayed up for a couple seconds. But then the wing folded on the pattern plane and it targeted good ole mother earth for a landing that left it shattered to smithereens with the rudder twirching. Naturally the ten dollar foamy stayed aloft and unscathed.

There are captions under the pics that will name names or otherwise tell you what you're looking at.
