Title: Electric ARF
Post by: Lyle Spiegel on December 24, 2018, 11:01:04 AM
I'm interested in trying electric and thinking about either the Brodak Electric Ringmaster or Electric Super Clown. Which is better choice?  Brodak also sells a prepackaged setup for power, but wondering if I should buy individual motor, ESC & timer & battery ? Trying to assist a friend who knows how to fly but  has not flown CL in a very longtime and wants to pickup a handle again. Thx and Happy Holidays

I would look at RSM also.   http://www.rsmdistribution.com/   Goto Electric Flight Products then goto Take Apart Kit Combos.   I prefer the KR timer that comes in the RSM package.  The flight streak is a good flying ship.   y1

Does RSM also offer ARF? Due to health issues, building a balsa kit the traditional way isnt an option.

I have the Brodak P-40 electric and their power package for it. Great flyer. I did get  3300 mA batteries for it. The Hubin timer is so simple to tune using pots.

Is there still an issue with control system that requires replacement of leadouts, etc or have the newer ARF's improved?

No.  Looks like Brodak is your best bet.  I agree with Motorman - bigger is better.   I would still go with the KR timer from RSM.  Easy to program.  Works with most any speed controller.  Has a fast acting instant shutdown feature that activates whenever the motor RPMs drop for any reason such as a nose over on takeoff.  It has saved me more then once from burning up a motor or speed controller.  I know other setups have over current protection etc but the KR timer seems to be the best for protecting agents burn outs.

Lyle....the latest iterations from Brodak (SV 11, Vector and Ringmaster) seem to have the control issue resolved.
I'm flying a nitro P-40 ARF that I just slit the plastic film and crimped the leadouts at the bellcrank. I also put some epoxy on the tube as insurance.
 Then resealed the slit...no biggie...

Have fun!
