Title: Ebay changes? They want your SS Number?
Post by: Avaiojet on January 26, 2021, 07:03:22 AM
Anyone else see the changes at ebay?

I've been getting emails but put off updating because of the information they are asking for.

Social Security number?

They are eliminating PayPal, and ebay says Government regulations is the reason for SS required information.

Have others complied?

I found this on line:

Ebay states, any sales over $20,000 and with 200 transactions will be reported to the IRS and You with a 1099-K........Paypal had a the same policy for years.....with one exception ......Paypal did not report your transactions to the IRS via social security number or employer identification number, if your total transaction were under $20,000.......Now with new managed payments system.....all money received goes to your bank account......and guess what.....your bank files with the IRS, all your monies in your account in that year......can you say IRS AUDIT ?......Ebay just put all sellers in the Hot Seat

While not saying that eBay is perfect, this request does comply with Federal law.  They do have to issue a 1099-K, just as employers need to issue W-2s, etc.  At a basic level, we do have a system of government, which includes taxes.

And, for those following the 1099-K closely, like myself, a number of states have lowered the $20K gross sales / 200 transactions limits.  For example, in Virginia, the limits are $600 gross / any transactions.

Google search: 1099-k virginia

Just one of the many, many reason I don't buy stuff on Ebay.

Buying stuff on eBay is one thing, selling is a whole 'nother nut to crack. Lots of people have quit selling due to the extra restrictions and BS.  None of this should affect any buyer, but if it ever does, I pretty much got everything I ever wanted!!

As far as receiving emails , I think eBay does all their communication like this through your account when you log on. No one would send you an email asking for your SS number unless it was a scam, I would think. I know I have received messages from eBay stating this and a few emails detailing it, but cautioning against any emails asking for information.  Forward the email to their security division, spoof@ebay.com .

  Type at you later,

The last time I sold some stuff on Ebay I lost money.   Also why has shipping gone up so much?   And PayPal has for some reason locked me down and even with the security number sent to my cell still won't let me in.  They don't answer phone calls either.   Guess they found out I voted for the man that lost.
