Each one, Teach one
« on: March 09, 2011, 08:01:36 AM »
                                                                                                                          Each one, Teach one.

After reading Bob's most recent article in Stunt News I just wanted to say, thank you Bob. We have all heard Bob preaching this “Each one, Teach one” idea, and I for one think it is great. Bob is one of the few people that is “actively” trying to build our hobby. Control line Precision Aerobatics runs deep in my blood and I too am always looking for new people join me at the field. When I got back from the W/C my local newspaper said that they wanted to do a write up on my trip and I was happy to accept this recognition, but not for myself. I used the newspaper to tell the story of how CLPA has changed my life and allowed me to do things that I would have never been able to do otherwise. I added my contact info at the end of the article but I have not received any calls or emails. I thought for sure that at least one or two people would contact me, but nothing yet. This just confirms what Bob said in his article, you have got to get that handle in their hand and “set the hook”.  I also keep a small ARF in the car when I go flying, just in case someone wants to give it a try, this is a great way to get people involved. I really like Bob's idea about having  a simple, to the point booklet about getting into control line aerobatics. I will be more than happy to contribute in any way needed  to get this off the ground.

Most of you know that I have 3 children and at least two of them show some interest in flying. There is no greater feeling than watching the reaction of someone who just learned a new trick, and I got to experience this at the past KOI.  My son Gavin did his first lazy eight and some inverted flight (Now, he has been flying (very little) for a couple years) but this is the first time that I saw real excitement from him. As soon as he landed he was ready to refuel and go again. (Previously, after one flight he was done) The fun only ended because of a crash during inverted flight after he did 2 or 3 laps on his own.  I was very proud to say the least and I hope to have him going through the entire beginner pattern by summer. If we all could take the time to “Teach one” the event would certainly grow.

Gavin is currently building a Tutor, he has done almost everything himself and really enjoys the challenge and the time we get to spend together.  I will post pictures when it is complete (he is waiting on his vinyl guy to cut him some stencils)
It is much better than him sitting in front of video games all day…..

Sounds great Derek and I hope to see Gavin in the winners circle.   Remember not to push him too hard.   H^^

This is a great thread. As you all well know, we are getting older and quite frankly, passing away. I am starting to see this a greater and greater problem. If you were to take the combined knowledge of say Jose Modesto,(I know him the best) and myself concerning CL stunt, and model aviation in general, the amount would actually be staggering!!

How are we going to pass this knowledge on, and insure the continued health of our sport? While it is early yet, I have some plans, at least for myself to address this problem and try to contribute some sort of effort towards ensuring what I believe, to be one of the greatest hobby\sports ever developed.

I think it's a great idea, and since I fly in the backyard, I always have my old Smoothie ARF that I learned to fly on ready to go.  My cousin is showing a lot of interest in CL, and he's about 8 years old.  I showed him how to round balsa wood one day in the workshop, and I gave him a scrap piece of wood, and sandpaper, and I showed him how to do it.  I told him to try it, and it came out VERY good!!!  While there were only a couple little low spots, and fully uniform, I, and my grandfather were very impressed.  My uncle has flown one flight in the past 2 years, but he has a Banshee with a Fox .35 that can go at anytime.

I've also had the next door neighbors' kids get their feet wet in CL, with 2 flights each on my profile.  They were thrilled to death when they landed about what they did.  Also another set of neighbors down the road a little bit have been threatening to try it out, but nothing so far.  It looks like it's growing little bits at a time over here in Northwest Vermont  #^

We, Black Hawk Models, just sent 20 kits to a school in Kentucky to teach model aviation.  Last year we sent 40 kits to a school in Southern California.  What I want to suggest is that clubs talk to local High Schools about offering an aviation class that would include building a model airplane and flying it, and maybe designing their own plane.  Over the last 3 or 4 years we have sent out a couple of hundred planes to schools and boys and girls clubs for after school projects. In general we have donated about 300 kits per year for the last 5 years to orphanages, homes for battered families and other charities.  These are seeds that we hope will grow.

Hi All,The EAA and AMA are sisiter organizations and I am putting together a program to teach not only model aviation but the basic principles of flight and above all safety in the shop for my local chapter.I have some of the old 15  cent gliders to start with to learn about flight.I have some styrofoam rubber powered ships so they can learn about powered flight and I picked up 20 NIP Cox .049s in Georgia last week and we are all going to build a simple C/L model and fly them for the last phase of our program.I have a bunch signed up already and it won't even be in the newsletter until April. The nice thing is the class is open to all ages and hopefully we can have a wide variety of students. That way we can teach one, two,or twenty!!!Can't wait,Jeff

Good stuff D.

Its encouraging to know when your busy practising for the worlds or a top 5 - that you would take time out of your schedule to throw a arf in the car and help newbies get into the game.

* take my hat off *

I remember during one of our state champs between round 1 & 2 - I helped a junior learn to fly his trainer - stuffed me up royal for the 2nd round.. but I got it sorted for rd 3 - only took 12 practice flights..

Yes, I am VERY competitive but at the end of the day I just love to fly! I wish everyone could experience the same. I fly C/L and R/C, I just like planes.......

Me too, I am fascinated by the big F3A ships. They really are amazing!! The build thread on those things are off the charts. It would really push my skills to the absolute limit. The power in the nose of those things is insane.
