Post by: Motorman on February 03, 2015, 12:25:33 PM
Has anyone done an electric ducted fan stunt ship, would it work?

I would imagine that it would need to be a twin engine so you could blow the air over the control surfaces.

Speed regulation would probably suck, perhaps even if you had an Igor timer set to "most aggressive".

But, wouldn't an A-10 Warthog just be hell on wheels?

Only if it has the rotational "mayhem" device in the nose of it !!

Well, at least it has been thought of before.  From the mind of Bill Netzeband, published in Model Airplane News, February 1957.

Randy

Randy I respectfully disagree.  I've seen firsthand how the device you mentioned can quickly and abruptly end any "mayhem" :D

I fly R/C electric ducted fans and I would never try to make a C/L stunt ship rely on an electric ducted fan for its power.  If you just want to fly circles or maybe a big loop sure.  But you try doing a square eight or something...Your gonna be picking up the pieces off the tarmac.  You lose energy very quickly with a ducted fan and they really don't put out much for lbs of thrust.  You would be having to run like a 6-8s lipo on a 90mm fan to get any where close to having the power to do maneuvers and if you did have enough power you would be doing them at 100mph lol.
