I got to hold a legend today.
« on: July 27, 2012, 06:48:34 PM »
I stop over at Jim Lynch's house today to check out the newest kit that is offered by Walter Umland. Jim's Volunteer. Walter did a great job on this kit. While I was there I had several surprises. One seeing this kit and reviewing the plans. I never knew what all went in to putting one of this kits together. The emails going back and forth, phone calls and then Jim took a ruler and made sure they were dead on to his plans. He then has to sign off on the plans before Walter starts to cut kits.
Jim said he has to stop work on his current projects and put the proto kit together.

Now the second surprise.... One of Jim's current project is building a replica of Lew McFarland's Humbler. The back story is that Kenny Stevens got Lew's plane that he won the worlds with. He stripped it and refinished it back to the way Lew had it. Kenny knew that Jim was building one and sent the plane by way of Charlie Reeves. Jim is going to use it as a guide to finish his.
What a great plane. And I was Humbled to be able to see this piece of Control line history. Wow!
And it was a take apart! The wing tips came off so Lew could fit it into the box to ship it over seas.
The glow plug was one I have not see before. But then there is a lot of stuff I have not seen.
A few pics. Enjoy.

Thanks Bob for filling in more of the gaps for me.
Steve did a nice job.

I can't wait to see Jim's copy. Jim is using parts from a kit. He said the flats were 1 inch longer on Lou's plane and the stab was bigger. He is going to correct that.

I hope to get a photo of them side by side one day.  ;D

The Humbler looks a lot like the Shark 45.
So whats the difference between the two, and which one came first ?

HI Allen,

The Humbler was the name Lew originally gave the model.  A take off on George's "Nobler".  It seems Jetco was the name changer when they kitted it.
