Title: Dremel Table saw?
Post by: dave siegler on December 13, 2011, 03:18:21 PM
I have a chance to a 580 table saw for just about the right price.  On the upside it seems to be in decent shape.

On the down side it has no rip fence, miter gauge or blade guard.  I just also bought a little 3 wheel (craftsman) band saw that I have to build a rip fence for.

I have a full sized contractors (Rigid) table saw a well and a good scroll saw.

1) Are these things usefull enough that I should go through all that trouble?

2) Can I Rip spars and TE material on the bandsaw that I have?

Any thoughts from owners of these saws?

Dave,

Don't hesitate, grab the bloody saw!

You can make a an adjustable fence, just clamp it down on each end. You can make an adjustable miter gauge also, heck, you build models.

The blade guard, I tossed mine. If you really feel you need it, I'll see if I can dig mine up.

Hey! If for nothing else, the Dremel table saw is perfect for notching LE's and TE's.

Besides, with all that stuff missing, the guy should just give it to ya!

Hi Dave,

I have been looking for a Dremel Table saw since dinosaurs were knocking on the door here.  BUT!  I do not have a table saw of any kind and would never get enough use out of a large one to justify one.  I am looking for one to rip L.E.s, I-Beam Spars, etc., etc..  (plus I am out of scroll saw blades right now! LOL!! )

I cannot say how much more you would use the small Dremel versus the large contractors size.

Bill,

I have an extra one almost new but no blade. Not sure about the accessories either as it has been years since I looked at it. You interested?

The table saw is great for ripping long peices using a fence.   I have a band saw and can't keep the blade from wandering even using a fence.   The full size table saw blade takes out a lot of material.   Can't find a thin saw blade for it.  Anyway go for the equipment and get it in shape.

There is one thing about the remarkable tool you must know, and it is the reason Dremel no longer sells them.  There was a fire hazard associated with the saw.
Sawdust gets sucked into the motor and over time if enough get in it can catch fire.  I know this from personal experience, mine almost burned up.  I started smelling smoke and saw a bright glowing ember in the motor.  I was lucky and shut things down and shot the motor with my fire extinguisher.  Anyway just keep it clean with a vacuum cleaner and you won't have any problems.  I have had mine for 20 years and cut countless sheets of wood.  I long ago replaced the blade with a carbide tipped blade that will outlast me.  Again make sure you keep the motor clean. y1

Do a search on the list here and I'm sure this has been covered in the past. Micro Mark still sells blades that will fit, and they offer a small saw that is supposed to be superior to the Dremel unit. You might want to look into that. The Dremel isn't made any more,as has already been stated. I have one that doesn't get used much, but when I need it I'm glad it's just sitting there waiting for me.
   Good luck with it,

I have a Micro Mark table saw, I use the carbide blade on it, its heavy enough to cut motor mount stock and anything smaller. Blade makes all the difference in the world. I have the taller fence they offer too plus the feather guides. Its well worth the $$. Much better than the Dremel ever was, I had one and it worked fine, but this one is much superior. Vaccum attachement does a pretty good job too, but I use and air hose and clean it out occasionally, just for safety sake.

Micro Mark also offers band saw blades of various teeth per inch and width of blade. Have you checked out the new power tools from Dremel? They have a power tool that looks like a Saber Saw, but uses all the bits and sanders from a regular Dremel tool. I'm hoping Santa gives me one for Christmas, it looks to be very usefull as well.

Someone that has a Dremel 580, what is the depth of cut at 90°, and also at 45°  ?
I have an idea how to make a low cost alternative to the Dremel and just wondering how it might compare with the 580, or other small hobby saws that are available ?

Very nice products!  Unfortunately, $450 (plus shipping?) for the basic saw is a bit steep for my retirement budget......... ;D

Very pricey, but I'm sure worth it for those that can afford/need the high quality.

Quite a while back, I added up all the accessories that I felt I would need for that saw, and it came to $585.00 bucks. I think the Micromark saw is probably the better all around saw for the stunt flyer, unless of course you can afford something that dedicated and expensive.

I just got my saw today.  Total damage was $32.50.  It seems in good shape, but I will need a fence and a new blade.

It needs a good cleaning but the bearings all seem in good shape.

I know you can get blades on line, but has anyone tried the 3 3/8 trim saw blades?
