Post by: Chuck Feldman on October 17, 2006, 01:17:17 PM: Working on a poor surface I managed to dent the silkspan in one bay. I spent yesterday putting up a good table and then I went out and bought a nice foam pad for it. The foam is covered with a nice cloth now so I should be OK working on models in the future. I was masking out the model when I damaged the silkspan. It was on one of those PVC racks we all seem to have!

OK so if any of you have a method to get the dents out I would really like to know how you do it. Medium silkspan, Brodak dope

I don't know where you are at in the finishing process. If you are at the beginning you should be able to get the dent out by re-wetting it and letting it re-shrink. I'd try that first.

How big a dent is it Chuck?

There are two dents both are dime size or smaller but not much. There is also a split that is on an edge I figure that one I can handle with patch. I got lucky because this is all on the bottom left wing.

If that won't work and its still important to you, time to do some patch work. Maybe you could put a sticker or trimsheet design over it to dress up the bottom a little; do it on both sides of the wing! 8)

I think the guys have given you a good plan for getting the dents out.
It's a good thing you got the padding that will certainly help. Problem with padding the table is that you can still set the model down on a tool and get dents.
I used a piece of styrofoam that came in the box of a new television to make a pedestal to put the plane on. There is no room on the pedestal for exacto knives or any other tools so I manage to get through the finish without damaging the plane by setting it on tools. I also have a couple 1 X2 sticks I padded for working on the fuselage sides. I highly recommend having these.

BTW, Byron should rename that thing to a building stand or finishing stand, because once the wing is in the fuse, I put it in the stand and it doesn't come out until the clear is on. I just got mine this year, and don't know how I ever lived without it!!! #^
