Title: Dope repair over Nason Clear Coat
Post by: John Lindberg on February 10, 2019, 02:39:33 PM
I have a built up elevator that was painted with Randolph cream, and then clear coated with Nason clear. The covering (silkspan) now has a hole in it and needs to be repaired. Anyone got a suggestion and how best to proceed?  :!

Well, I sprayed automotive 2-part clear coat over Brodak dope.  Later, tried to put on AMA numbers using a paint mask and more Brodak.  Looked OK until first wipe-down.  The numbers came right off.

You need to carefully block sand the area around the hole  until you get through the clear coats and step down to the original color. and finally to the covering. If silks span, tear a patch the size that you need. Don't use scissors, and leave the edge rough. Dope down the patch or apply with Elmers glue. When dry, make sure it's shrunk, then apply the coats of clear dope for build up and feather the edge of the patch with sand paper on a block after each coat. Uou can run a little extra dope around the edge at each coat to help fill in. Eventually the edge will disappear. Then touch up your colors, then reapply the Nason.
This is the problem with the 2 part clear paints, and having a mix of products underneath, trying to affect a repair. Next airplane, just apply the Nason around the nose area, where you will get fuel drops and such. I have not got into the two part stuff yet, but having seen several models with it applied just around the nose it was sanded and buffed to where you could not see the difference. Just use clear dope on the rest of the airplane.
  Type at you later,

Dope over Nason will not work, it will attack (and win.)  Do as Dan wrote above, keeping the Nason well back from your dope repair during the repair and then, as Dan says, Nason last.

Thanks for the reply's, think I will do what Dan says, just use the Nason around the nose. My planes suffer too much from "hangar rash!" That is- "Ooooops I didn't mean to do that!"  HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~>
