Don't pass up those yard sales!

9 times out of 10 there is nothing worth picking up at the weekend yard sales- but that 1 in 10 makes it worth the effort to stop- especially on a Fri of Sat morning before they get picked over.

Beautiful pair of Craftsman Stainless Steel Pinking scissors with man size handles, and a pair of like new Gingher dressmaking shears- $10.  The shears cut lightweight fiberglass cloth like paper- crisp edges with no snags / frays.

I know what "pinking shears" are, but why would I want some?

They say cutting Glass cloth with Pinking Shears keeps it from fraying.

They are also good for cutting cloth hinges, the sawtooth edge seems to fill / sand better to help them disappear.  The old Perfect cloth hinges and I think the Carl Goldberg ones had " pinked" edges.

Besides they say "Craftsman" and "Stainless Steel" on them - heck that's just cool!

Hey Don- I have been stuck in Alburquerque NM all winter. Had a friend bring my Ringmaster from Phoenix when he drove over. did alright in ABQ, but then I went up by los Alomos, another 1000 ft highr, and a bit breezy. Stuck it in the ground- nothing new there!

I have a couple tools on the schedule for Portland in late fall, they may pull them in a bit, so I will be back - but first I have to swelter in Phoenix again for most the summer.

Say Hi to the gang- and I'm jealous of the weather reports I see for PDX - always seems nicer than NM.

   I can't agree more about yardsales. I spend 4 weeks a year in the US and I keep my eyes skinned at every yard sale I can get to. I got a Cox U control Fokker tripe, brand new in box for $5 and quite a few decent modelling tools over the years. My best buy was at a yard sale where the folks were moving. Down in the basement I found a nice old fashioned flight box, it had a good selection of Xacto blades and handles, loads of Fox glow plugs and glow plug leads, various props, glow plug and prop spanner and I don't know what else. The owners of the house said that it was in the basement when they moved in about 30 years before. Can't remember what I paid, but it was peanuts.
  Last year, I managed to get it back to the UK after a period in a friends loft! I started cleaning it down and found a door at the back of the box, curious, I opened it up. Inside there was a McCoy 49 blackcase ignition engine, an Atwood Triumph 49 ignition and a pre war Dennymite. There was also a lot of ignition motor points and plugs!
  I don't usually get very lucky, but this time I seem to have hit the jackpot. The Dennymite needs some serious restoration but the other two engines were very low time, managed to get them flying last Fall. The moral of this tale is keep an eye open for yard sales!
