Title: DOC's Project
Post by: john e. holliday on April 17, 2011, 07:28:32 PM
Just a couple of shots.  One is the project before I put the leading edge peices on.  While it was drying I started a second project.  Also in the pic you will see the CLC weights.  I talked to Jim about them at VSC telling him how they kept sliding off the balsa or any surface I would put them on.  What I did was put a coat of sylicone glue on one face of each weight.  They now stay put.  More later.

Notice:  All parties interested in identification of Doc's latest effort must hold a TOP SECRET CLEARANCE and must be prepared to prove that said clearance has been granted and is currently in effect.  Processing of applications will begin when Doc returns to this thread.....Good Luck.... n1   D>K

Yes the project is the P-47 by Pat Johnston.   The other is the International Stunt Winner from Walter Umland.    H^^

Update on the projects.  Yes I am slow as I want to do Pat's design justice.   And the ISW construction is going better.  Sure glad Walter has construction photos on his sight.  With all the stuff going on with Easter,  the city clean up and the vehicle, I hope to get it flying before the end of the year.  Oh, I did do some cutting on the King Sweep.  The construction on that thing is so stiff and solid the steam iron and also tried boiling hot towels, the warp will not budge.

Lookin good Doc!
I like the wing construction on the ISW. What is used for spars? are they forward swept with sheeting?

Both really neat planes Doc. The ISW is a real looker in my book, and should fly well also.

If you go to Walters site you will see the construction photos.  I have been visiting it quite a bit.   H^^

Doc,
The P-47 wing is coming out spectacularly well.  So far, so good.  What is the weight of the all up wing at this point?
I've been away from the site for a couple of weeks.  Annette broke her upper arm, had a Titanium shaft inserted in it to stabilized the bones and is feeling much better each day.  No fun, but the marvelous Medical care and technology is amazing.  I thank God we are blessed to have the best health care in the world!

I finally had some time today and yesterday to get the to the fuse of the P-47.  First pic is of ISW fuse.  Then I tried the dacron hinges I got from CLC on the ISW stab and elevator.  After applying about four coats of dope to the hinge areas I started applying the hinges.  Most of the time was spent on waiting for the dope to dry.  In less than 15 minutes the stab/elevator were hinged.  The last pic is the P-47 fuse being started.

Doc,
Thanks for the shots of the P-47 fuselage.
To all: It appears that Doc is using the technique where the top of the formers are temporarily removed to allow the fuselage to be built flat, upside down.  This is a good plan for some building styles.  Also, note that the fuselage sides are two piece.  The front sides are made of thicker balsa (1/4") which allows the front sections a little more shaping.  The rear sides are 3/32" stock.  The splice is in the middle of the wing, so the stresses are functionally non-existent on the structural joint.  I think that the interior 1/64" doubler is visible along with the transition point between the front 1/4" sides and the rear 3/32" sides.  I developed this technique to make the shaping of round noses much more realistic and easy to do.

I did add a peice of 1/32 ply to  the inside of the joint.

Good plan to install a doubler on the inside where the two fuselage side pieces join.  Good thinking, Doc.  This shows well in the photo.

Doc!
I flew the Mako Jet for the first time last night!  Finally...  Weather here has been gnarly.
I wanted to mention this since the airfoil on both the MJ and your P-47 both have the same genesis in the same design approach.  The MJ produced nice corners with clean exits for squares and triangles.  Tracking was effortless in the rounds.  Bottoms were consistent 3-5' with ease.  What was interesting, that with the good corner, the level flight was super stable to the point of practically "hands off" flying.  In fact, even thought the CG is right on the 20% position, the plane's stability feels like it is nose heavy.  That is likely why the tracking in the rounds is so good, along with the consistent bottoms.
The airfoil uses and elliptical front with the total high point at 20% back.  The MJ uses an 18% thick section in the root and a 16% thick tip for reduced drag at the tips to help in windy turbulence.  Time will tell just how well this last point works.  Your P-47 tips transition naturally to a relatively thin section, so that is similar in effect.
If your P-47 has anywhere these charactoristics, it will be a total winner.
