DOC's Arctic Fox

Well I have made a little progress since returning from VSC/Tuscon.  Of course Sandy has been of very little help.  I can't beleive I have spent more than three days making the cowl for the Fox.  Before first coats of dope it weighs 23.7 ounces.  No landing gear, engine, tank or covering.  Have two coats of clear dope on the bare wood.  Will sand and weigh again.  Then again I might wait until I get more dope on it before the Polyspan.  Having fun, DOC Holliday

Are you sure you did the lead out correct? The last one I saw up close the lead outs were comeing out on the other wing.

It should fly good doc and you got more horses in it than mine. Keep er up! You should try cowling in a fox 35 in it. Lookin good doc.

Doc, it's your plane so you can do whatever you want to with it. I also used builtup wingtips. Sounds to me that you will be light enough. Good luck buddy and I hope you will like the way it flies.

Up date just for Leo,  I have busted my butt trying to do a decent job on this plane.  It is covered with Polyspan I sbtained from Tom Morris. 

I put clear dope on the bare wood starting with 2 coats, then sanded.  Another 2 coats and sanding. Finally 1 coat of dope.  By the way the dope is Brodak clear thinned half dope and half thinner.  It is all brushed.  Tom says to put the Polyspan down dry.  I did the main wing with polyspan then the tips with silkspan per Tom.  Put 2 coats of clear on the wing once I got it covered.  Light sanding with 2 more coats applied.

Then I started on the rest of it.  I have used polyspan on the rest of it.  There is a secret to polyspan that comes off the roll, even the stuff I have that was folded.  The material curls with the rough side inside the curl.  Also if you hold it up to the light you will see the difference in the sides.  But, as Tom says, "If you get the wrong side down it just takes more dope to get rid of the fuzz". 

Right now with the addition of two more coats of dope it weight 1 pound 8.6 ounces.  Try ing to keep it light.  Having fun,  DOC Holliday

It's really looking good Doc and if you come out at 40 ounces you will be perfect. I think mine weighs 43 ounces and still flies good. Way to go Doc! I like the wing tips. Nice job. Leo
