District IV
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:26:27 AM »
Hey folks,

If you live in District IV and are up to something interesting in your shop this winter, email me a picture, or just email me with what you are up to.  I've had alot of material to cram into the last couple of SN issues, but with things slowing down this winter its a great time to pass along any projects you are working on so I can get it into the next issue!
Hope everybody had a great Christmas and New Years!

Steve

HI Steve,

I'll see what I can scrounge up.  I always had a problem with column filler.  But you shouldn't have a problem with Tate and Willis!

BTW: I haven't disconnected my phone, but is it because I am no longer the District VP, you are?  ;D

Steve,

I live in Newport News, VA.  Are you in the general vicinity?  I used to fly C/L years ago and decided to get back into it.  I have a Gieseke Nobler just about ready to go that I built from an Ultra Hobbies kit.  I also have an RSM Shoestring with a PA 51 on a pipe that is just about ready to be covered.

My dad owned a hobby shop in Portsmouth for 36 years and was an avid R/C competitor.  He passed away back in 2005, but I have his AMA number.....880.  Gotta' love that.

Hi Bill
I knew your father and Mom since I was about 11 years old I’m 72 now. I considered him a close friend. He taught me and and many others a lot about RC. Old war stories, the time he bailed out of his P-47 and many other good times at Moffit field. The RC Club had a Memorial Fly-In for him a few years ago and I was invited to fly a control line plane. What a honor.

Willis,

It's a pleasure to hear from you.  It's been a long time.  I've been playing around with electric R/C stuff.  I've got 4 or 5 planes I fly when I can.  I'd really like to get my C/L stuff going again.  Are you still living in the same place over in Portsmouth?  Where are you guys flying C/L these days?  Sorry about all the questions.  I'd really like to catch up some time.

Thanks for responding.  The modeling community has always been a close one.  I'm glad to see nothing has changed.

Jimmy,

I appreciate your response to my posting.  I don't recall your name but I bet I would recognize your face.  There probably aren't any modelers that came into the hobby shop that I didn't meet.  I spent many, many hours there.  In fact, I was probably the little kid that waited on you most of the time.  I'm 48 years old now.  Sorry, I'm not trying to make you feel old.  I look forward to seeing you and all the other nice folks associated with this hobby I have known over the years.

Thanks for the kind words about my Dad.  He was an airplane guy through and through.

Go ahead and make Jimmy feel old, it won't bother us any!  S?P

We fly over at Fentris NALF on Sundays when the temps are above freezing and the wind below 20 kts...

Willis,

I'm working Thursday but I'll try to swing out there during lunch time.  I usually leave the office around 11:20 for lunch.  I work up at Ft Eustis.  Is the Hampton Coliseum a place you guys use frequently?

Bill.
The Hampton Coliseum is our mid week flying site when we can get up the guys that live in Williamsburg and Newport News. Your dad’s shop was great place to pick up your modeling supplies here in Portsmouth. I flew with him back in the 1980’s some with the Hampton Road RC club.

Willis, Jimmy and all,

I enjoyed seeing all of you yesterday.  That makes me want to finish my planes and get out there again.  Please let me know if you guys get together over here again.  I'll try to stop by and say hello.

Hey Steve  I was able to get get a past controlline flyer back to his youth. He flew as a kid then moved to RC but he is getting silly again flying 1/2a jumping bean. I forgot how much fun they are. He has a 35 Buster ready to finish. He has covered with silk and silk span on the fuse. Soon he will start a Veco Chief which he has an LA 40 or fP for power. I have been lazy of course, but did get to fly this past Saturday.
