I have never been tempted to "crock pot" any engine or muffler to clean the baked on castor. Today I took a Bernz-O-Matic torch and heated a muffler and using a wire brush removed all the baked on castor. Not to spiffy new condition but no more brown castor.

Crock potting will take that off, and so will paint stripper I think if it's the only thing you have on hand. Wire brushed will scratch it up but get the job done. Sand it back to dull with some 600 or finer paper, then polish it out to shiny again and it will clean up easier next time
