Is the lamp comming on during the scan?

Try to remove power from the machine, wait 30 seconds, power it back up and try again.

Don,
All that I can suggest is unplug it, uninstall the drivers from your computer, power it back up and re-install the drivers like its a new machine. If you get the same after all of that, the scan head is toast.

Donnie,

Just hop down to Office Depot. You can get a decent USB scanner for close to the repair bill.

Randy's right.  It ain't worth fixing these things anymore.  You can get a slide capable scanner for under $100.  Besides reinstalling the drivers, look at the settings for the machine.  They may have gotten screwed up also.

You can get really strange results if you re-scan stuff that is printed from a scan.  Moire pattern interference, although it usually isn't this bad.

Without a scanner you are dead in the water. Seeing I sent you plans you should be able to get new scanner or send me slides and I will scan them for you.
Seeing you are getting a scan can you put them on the computer and just not print them. You can e-mail me one of the scans and see what i get. I may be able to print it. If none of this works I would get a rope!??!!@@## HB~>

Scanning slides,,
« Reply #13 on: January 19, 2008, 06:01:03 AM »
We went through this whole "scanning" slides discussion about three years ago.

Somebody suggested just projecting them on a wall or screen and re-fo-grapping with a digital camera.

Although skeptical, I tried it an it worked better than you'd think.

It takes the scanner out of the loop.  Furhermore, 35 mm slides were made to be projected, not copied small.

Note:  These were some pretty old slides and the photo quality wasn't all that great to begin with, but they were re-shot with my hand-held camera while being projected on a wall.

Check the yellow pages. I know there are places that will take your slides and transfer them to a CD for you.

This way they will never fade.

You know, I explored that.  It was a bit too costly for me.  The method I quoted costs ZERO, and it gets good enough results to post on web sites, especially considering the reduced format allowed for posting.

I buy my computers from Gateway.  My last buy included a new Canon printer/scanner unit that came with a mail-in rebate that got the cost pretty near zero.

The new scanners available probably assume you have modern software and enough memory to run them.  In other words: go all new.

Don't panic, Don.   There are lots of scanners out there that will do the trick for you.   Before you buy, be sure that you have followed all the suggests presented here, including unplugging the unit from the AC.

Here is a small HP scanner, a G3010,  that has 4800 x 9600 dpi resolution, will scan both slides and negatives, and is under $100.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/photography/scanner/1/storefronts/L1985A%2523B1H

If you do have to buy a new one, you might consider this unit.

Cheers.

Don,

In one of your earlier posts, you mentioned slide/film scanning in a "3-1" unit.  I haven't seen a unit like that, and if they do exist, they are probably high-end/expensive.

Now about that error.....it's important to stop and study what that "error thingeee" says.  Force it to happen again, and this time write it down verbatim, or copy and paste, if possible.   Post the "error thingeee" here or run it through Google and see what results come up.  It might be something simple and straight forward.

There are lots of knowledgeable computer gurus that frequent these boards....they might just save you from buying a new scanner when the problem is software related.

Oh, by the way, I turned that little round thingeee sticking out next to your engine and nothing happened.....what's it for anyway?    <g>

Cheers.

Last time I bought a scanner I got a HP Scanjet 5500c that has a slide scanner also. Although it will copy at 1200dpi and interpolate higher, I was fortunate enough to borrow a Nikon Coolscan IV that scans only slides...at 2900dpi, plus corrects minor focus irregularities (warped slide) and color settings Kodachrome vs Ektachrome, etc.

It might be possible to rent such a scanner. Have lots of storage available, each slide comes out ~34Meg. Of course you can re-size them for less, but I would rather throw each tray of 100 slides on a DVD.

Don,
By chance, when you un-installed the drivers: Did you un-plug the scanner from your Computer first before un-installing? You need to, and then reboot your computer when it says its removed. Plug it back in then after it re-starts windows, and re-install your drivers.

Some times it is much cheaper in the long run to replace some things.  My lap top had been acting up when I would try to power it up.  The last couple of weeks had to unplug power cord to get it to come up.  Spilled some coffee on it Saturday and I turned it over as soon as I could and tried drying it.  It worked for a little while then the power said I quit.  Could not get it to come back up.  Have new lap top with three year warrenty on it now.  DOC Holliday

Don,

I have an extra scanner that has always worked fine until I set it aside in September after purchasing a new copier which also scans.  If you want to give it a try, I'll send it with no guarantees.  It was working fine when I last used it or I wouldn't think of bearing the cost of shipping.
