Title: Dick Mathis profile stuka
Post by: James D. Hayes on March 17, 2013, 01:15:55 PM
I've just started a build and I have a engine question. I'm building a Dick Mathis profile Stuka and I'm not sure which engine would be a good match. Specs. on the plane are: 32.5" profile fuselage with a 50.5" wingspan and non functional (stationary flaps. Wing area is 535 sq. in. and the plan calls for a .35 to .40 engine. I have a variety of engines to choose from including a .40 OS LA, .40 OS FP, .35 K&B torpedo, .35 fox, and a .35 Redhead. I'm leaning towards one of the .35's and would like to keep the plane as nostalgic as possible. Thanks

I used an O.S. 25 (abc - ball bearing) and proped it for lap times. Couyld have used an "FP" 25.  Much more and you are adding nose weight.
Flys on 60 x .015 lines just fine.
DO NOT....make the stationary flaps into "stunt flaps"  it will not turn any better and will actually turn worse (don't ask how I know)

Are you thinking of the Don Still full fuselage OTS model or the much larger Dick Mathis profile published in the late '70's (I think)?

If it is the same one Walter Umland did a short kit of,  go with the .46.   I have the laser cut parts and full size plans from Walter.

James doesn't mention the LA.46 in his original question.

Out of the list of options he does give, I would say the FP or LA .40. Either one would be a great choice for this model.

Oh, and James, nostalgia can be cool but if you want a consistent running model without headaches, leave the .35's you've mentioned on the shelf. y1

Yes, this is not the first time I have been told that. thanks for the suggestions. I have a LA .46 but think I may go with the FP .40 for this model. Anyone know where I can get a tonque muffler that will fit it??

Thanks

RSM has some really nice tongue mufflers sold under the name "Hobby Fasteners". They are also super light. y1

James doesn't mention the LA.46 in his original question.

My bad, didn't read close enough.   But, in my opinion, having both of the LA's and seeing later he has a .46, I still say go with the .46 as it is a much better engine straight out of the box.

I have one with an OS 35S and is is more than adequate. More modern engines are more powerful but they are also much heavier and require tail weight to get balanced. Think light on this model to fully appreciate its potential.
