Title: Detroiters in California
Post by: Dave_Trible on March 26, 2015, 05:55:14 AM
I received this nifty photo overnight from Ron O'Toole and want to add it to the record.  1961 Los Alametos Nats.  Billy Werwage,  Ron O'Toole,  Eddie Cameran,  and Jim Vornholt.  IBeams, elbow grease and Brylcream for shine.

If it's wrong John  I'm sorry-second hand info.  My bet is Cali is right but wrong year- might be 1960.

I have the Airon plans at home with some dates on them. I'll check it out tonight.

Dave

I'm pressing Ron for plans to his ship.  Not sure there will be any luck getting Apollo plans.

If it was West Coast it was 1959 or 1963.  Had to be '59 because Bill got 2nd behind Gialdini in Open in 63'.  Steve Harris edged out Bart Klapinski in Sr. and Gerry Cipra won Jr. in 63'.

Yep, pretty sure it was '59 at Los Alamitos. My Dad and I went there to watch one of the days.

...Hey Dave, No reason to be sorry... and wasn't '60, 60 was Dallas. (My brother Al was there with a few other Long Island Wingmasters club members.)  John

Just heard back from Ron.  He says the pic WAS Willow Grove after all.  Also sadly he 'air designed' his airplane-never drew a plan.:(((

I think 1960 was NAS Dallas...last Nats' I attended before going into the Army!

So it probably had to be '59.

Incidentally that's a fantastic photo and could probably be retouched to improve the quality digitally.  It truly belongs in the AMA Museum.

This was a group from the 1961 Nats in Willow Grove, PA. Jim Vornholt won Junior Stunt that year with the Airon. Billy won Senior with the '59  Ares, and Eddie Kammerer flew Billy's refinished larger Ares (the one that would be come known eventually as the 1962 Ares). Billy built that larger Ares to accommodate the extra power that he hoped would be produced by the new engine that he and Hi Johnson were working on. That engine never came to fruition, and Billy didn't think that the new, larger ship would be competitive with a Fox 35 for power. He gave it to Eddie, and they refinished it with Eddie's scheme and numbers. It flew very well, even with the Fox in the nose.

I was there to watch all these guys fly that year. Vornholt was just amazingly good, as was Billy.

The photo could be called "The A Team" or "The A Planes"!!! All beginning with the letter A. I can't quite make out the name on Ron's model because of the lightglare, is it Aetos?
  Very cool picture!

It was named the Aeolus. Here's something about the name from Greek literature...

Aeolus figures most prominently in Greek literature during one particular episode of the Odyssey. According to Homer, Odysseus and his men landed on Aeolia, lost yet again. Aeolus promised to help Odysseus and gave him an ox-skin bag containing the four winds.

Now in the possession of Jive Combat Team Archives.  I brought it to the 2003 Nats, but still didn't make the finals.

MAN! That is one wide trackin'-Pontiacin' of a landing gear placement! About half way out each wing. Big low aspect ration wing also. I like the vehicles in the back ground also! Ron was a winner that AYSCA or whatever it was competion around that time, wasn't he? Three disciplines with the same airplane? Someone hep me out!
   Type at you later,

WE GOTTA FIND THAT BAG!!!!! Poke a 5MPH calibrated hole in it and we can have PERFECT Nats weather every time, and by rotating it we could always keep the sun to our backs!!!!!!
