Dee Rice Oriental 502 tribute
« on: December 06, 2024, 08:59:49 AM »
I've just added another design in the "502" series, the Oriental 502.  This one is a great little tribute to my buddy, designer Dee Rice.  This version uses the full and half ribs of the 502 series with the +P airfoil.  The tail volume (tail moment and tail area) has been increased a whisper to match the rest of the series.  I will attach both the IC and electric versions.  Both use the same wing plan.  I think this is close to the 20th in the 502 series.  It just followed the Shark 502, which I got excited and built this last month.

Pat, I remember Dee Rice back when the Brotherhood of the Ring forum was still active, sad to see it went into oblivion.

I hate to sound ignorant, but sounds like you've made improvements and this is an upsized version? I have Brodak's profile kit version.

How does yours differ to Brodak's? Will a kit be offered?

GG,
The Original
Oriental is 536 squares compared to the new one at 502 squares.  The 502 will fly very well with the +P airfoil and increased tail volume coefficient.  The all up flying weight should be close to 35-37 ounces.  Yes, I can cut a kit for any of my designs.  The 502 series all cost $192.  They have only contest grade wood, so a light plane is easy to achieve.  Catch me at: patsplans@yahoo.com for more details.  Call if you would like to talk about them.  (208) 877-9031.

Very nice Pat. Which of the unofficial stunt events is this airplane eligible for?

Thanks

Specifically, the only official event available is profile stunt. I think most profile rules around allow this sort of design. The 502 series fits the bill for those who want a smaller profile that still flies with the best.

Pat, not trying to hijack the thread, but there is a design you did that I have always wanted to build - the profile Gee Bee R-2 you did in the May '96 Model Aviation.

How much would a kit of this design run, and have you considered scaling it down to fit into the 502 series? Oh, and what about an electric version of both?

If I can ever scrape together enough funds, I would greedily snap up both a full size version and a 502 series version.

Wow, Steve!  What an interesting possibility.  The Gee Bee R2 would make for a really interesting 502 series plane.  As for the 46 size version, I would guess that a $250 dollar bill would be in the ballpark.  I tend to do all in both IC and electric power, so that would be no problem.  With the handles set up for throttle control with electric power, the R2 would be a blast.  I'm threatening on converting my R2 to electric, and now with the good throttle control handle can control the motor rpm's nicely.  We are totally in the golden age of C/L.  Sad that so many are not here to enjoy it.

PS.  Also just thought of my buddy Mark Scarborough's Gee Bee Model Y which he used a Brodak P40 wing on.  Flew the heck out of that one with a 46.  Really another good looking machine.

Patrick, I just checked my phone for your contact number and compared to the one posted above. I found "871" in my phone, vs. "877" in the post above. Which is correct is the real question?

I also wanted to ask about how Dee Rice is doing? It seems like a long time ago that I met him at Thun Field in Puyallup, amid his NW golfing tour.   H^^ Steve

PS: I got a bionic knee on Nov. 5, and recovery is progressing...but painful and sometimes not much sleep.

Went to the NW Skyraider's meeting today and asked if anybody had Pat Johnston's phone number. Got it confirmed that it's 871, and NOT 877, so if you want to actually talk to Pat, try fixing the phone number first.  H^^ Steve
