Guys,
I'm posting this here because I think the problem may common enough.
My buddys tacho went dead and since I'm an electronics whizz by profession he gave it to me to have a look at.
Dead as a dodo. Nothing happening when switched on. Good batteries.
When I went poking around inside of it I realised that all that was wrong with it was with the wiring from the battery compartment to the printed circuit board. Dry joints. 5 minutes and 4 inches of wire later it was working as well as ever. Both wires looked healthy at both ends, so it wasn't black wire, which is what I was thinking first.
Looking at similar type items on an almost daily basis makes me think that there may be many dead tachos lying around with this issue.
Unfortunately for my buddy he had a new one got before he gave me his old one....

I have soldered various items on my TNC about 10 times. As superior as the electronic design is, the mechanical layout is not.
