De-bonding Sig-Ment

Question about de-bonding cured Sig-Ment.  Is straight acetone hot enough to de-bond or loosen cured Sig-Ment?  How about Kleen-Strip lacquer thinner?  Randolph dope thinner?

Cellulose Nitrate  15%
Isopropyl Alcohol 5%
Toluene 20%
Acetone 40%
Methyl Ethyl Ketone 10%
Dioctyl Phthalate  >5%

Acetone should do. One easy way to find out!

Pure acetone is the best choice.  Methylethylketone is OK but a little slower.  If the product is really dry you will have difficulty or will not be able at all to dissolve it with paint thinner etc.

If you have acetone on hand it should work. IF it doesn't and you must purchase something, Toluene.

Acetone will debond Sigment just fine.  Be patient...      I use a small pipette to put the acetone where it is needed.  Keep reapplying as the acetone evaporates.

Toluene is an excellent component of thinners for nitrocellulose-based products and in nitrocellulose paints it is very useful for obtaining a smooth film free of orange peel wrinkles.  However, you will have a lot of difficulty dissolving dry nitrocellulose using toluene.

Use acetone and wrap it with plastic to slow the evaporation. If it's a large part, say a wing, put it in a trash bag and pour in some acetone.

A handy source of acetone is the In the nail polish section of the grocery store. Make sure it says 100% acetone. Some are not 100% and contain an oil to prevent skin drying out.

The EPA and DEA seem to be in control over just how much Acetone one can purchase at a time.  Several months ago I went to Walmart and got two gallons of Acetone. They would not let me buy but one gallon. something about meth.  So I bought one gallon, on credit card, took it  out to may car and went back in and got another gallon, took it to a different cashier and paid with cash.  Stupid law was too easy to by pass. What drug maker is going to put Acetone on a credit card?  I use this stuff to clean my brushes and spray guns.

I do think we go overboard on the whole solvents thing.  Meth heads will find ways to make meth.

Repeated application of acetone, flooding and wicking did the trick.
