Dawn Power Dissolver
« on: October 19, 2007, 05:38:45 PM »
This is not a review of this product.  You can judge for yourself but I doubt I will use the Crockpot/antifreeze method again.

There is a guy on ebay selling this stuff 3 bottles for $9.50 with $8.95 flat rate shipping.  I bought several bottles at WalMart for $1.29 a bottle.  While reading the back of the bottle I found a website that will give the locations of stores in your area that carry it.  All you need to do is enter your zipcode and then highlight which product you want... Dawn Power Dissolver.  If there are no stores in your area can buy online directly off the wbsite.

Ohhh!  a warning...dont let your wife know how good it works by testing it on one of her pots or pans, then showing her.

Hi Tom,

I got some a while back from Wal Mart, IIRC.  It has worked pretty good for engine clean up.

Are you going to Huntersville?  We are leaving in the morning, just couldn't make it up there today.....

I read a mention about this stuff about a month ago and found it at Wal-Mart. I was a little dissapointed that the bottle was a little smaller than I had imagined but was more surprised that it was nearly 3 dollars a bottle!

Here I find myself surprised yet again to hear someone else get it from basically the same  store I did at less than half what I paid for it!

As for does it work? Yes it does. However I will not yet give up my crock pot just yet... I feel there is a time for both.

I only used the old crock pot and anti freeze once.  Took too long, and I did like the smell!  (I've HAD to work on too many cars! LOL!!)

I still use the tin pot, dishwasher gel, and boil it.  It takes the paint off, cleans everything like new and is not a hazzard to me.  Plus I have not encountered any of the "discoloration" of the engine cases.  Takes about 20 minutes to remove the WORST baked on castor and grime, cleans ball bearings, etc., etc..

Hi Dennis,

I have an old tin pot that Gail lets me use, and I do fill it up far enough to allow it to completely cover the parts (plus a *little* extra for it boiling some out).  I have never measured the amount of the gel, I just use the "TLAR" method.

I do keep am old toothbrush handy to brush off grass blades and such from in the fins.

Not "dishwashing" gel, but *dishwasher* gel (plain old generic).  All bets are off if you use regular dishwashing stuff, I have never tried it.  Bets the heck out of a crock pot for me!

Exactly how do you use the Dawn?  I have some old stuff that could really stand to be shined up a little.

For the "Dawn Dissolver" I simply squirt it on the parts.  I think I will use an acid brush next time and pour some into a container, but squirting it straight out of the bottle works.

Hi Tom

Everyone needs to be very carefull  with Dawn Power Disovle,  It will setup rust and corrodes  steel, bearings  and  sets up corrosion on aluminum  very badly. I tried this myself, and after you use it you need to cover the inside and outside with oil, afterrun or some type to help ward off the corrosion it causes.
Noel Drindak sent a motor to me he had just cleaned with this product, It had already started to setup bad corrsion and  rust on the parts inside and out.

Regards
Randy

For myself, I try to brush parts off with a toothbrush within 5 minutes or so of spraying the Dawn Powe Dissolver on, then rinse the parts in hot water.

Then I dip the parts in boiling water in a pan on the stove, drain the water and dip them in a 50/50 mix of Marvel Air Tool Oil and Marvel Mystery Oil, then drain the oil by letting the parts sit in a strainer.  It's worked like a charm for most stains and crap.

I've been leary of letting the parts sit very long with the Dawn on, because I've had several parts discolor using antifreeze in a crockpot.

The engines I've cleaned this way have remained loose and free for many months, with no rust or damage that I can see.

Back when I was trying to compete in F2C,  Jim Dunkin was teaching us how to set up the old Tigers.  After disassembly we would use soap and water to clean them with a little Ajax Cleanser.  Rinse the parts off in boiling hot water and put them on towels to be sprayed down with WD-40,  it was good stuff back then.  Thenevery thing was fitted and oiled down.  Never had a problem with rust or discoloration.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday
