Dave Slagle's new C/L build
« on: April 14, 2018, 07:05:39 AM »

Here's Dave's latest C/L build. Don't have the specs on it yet, but Dave changed the design a bit from the currently flying C/L 'Bippi'. He put forward stagger in the slightly swept elliptical wings, mounted the bellcrank in the wing rather than the fuselage for easier disassembly and powered it with a 1.20 four stroke (Yikes!). It will again have a servo operated throttle. It'll be flying sometime this summer.

Looks interesting.   But, 1.20 is way too big for me. H^^ H^^

Thanks for sharing. He still builds beautiful planes. That one is no exception. Since he has a throttle all should be good. He may never have to use more than a third of the throttle.

Ara,
I will be in Maine sometime early May. We need to go flying!
I’d like to meet Dave if we can coax him away from his RC transmitter.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

Let me know when you'll be in Maine. Thursdays are our clubs informal flying day for RC and C/L but any day is OK. One of our members, Don Coe, also flies electric stunt. A visit with Dave is a definite. Unfortunately, his flying days are over due to health problems.

Hello Thank-you Ara for posting the update and picture. Your article in Issue 4 of 2017 Stunt News was very enlightening and entertaining read. Its nice to see he has continued his Bippi theme back into control line after so many RC Pegasus powered Bippi's. Dave has been both very innovative and productive!
Regards Gerald

PS Brodak should make a Chekala Roma to put all those old Super Cyclones and other sparkies on  ;)

Slagle used to fly at our field in South Gate, CA (near L.A.).   His dad rolled out the lines, fueled the plane, started and adjusted.  Slagle only had to pick up the handle.

The rest of us were amused at this level of assistance.  We had to do our own stuff!

Thanks, Dave and I have become good friends from putting the article together.

But a Brodak Chekala Roma kit! What a great idea!! It's worth a call to John to see what he thinks.

Somehow it's comforting to see that whiz kid from the '40's building the occasional beautiful CL model so many decades later.

It appears he has gotten over that issue rather well.

Certainly, Slagle at age 12 or 13 could have managed everything by himself.  His flying sessions were accompanied by both parents, who were ever so eager.
