Dave Rees T-38A Super 70s
« on: September 26, 2020, 11:49:38 AM »
Back before the present foolishness with the China Wuhan Virus scare, I built a Dave Rees T-38a Talon (Flyimg Models April 1974 and February 1975) painted in the same scheme as a T-38 that I flew on my first T-38 Solo at Vance AFB, OK in the early Spring of 1976.  What a great aircraft.  I finished it for the 2020 VSC but could not make it to the meet.

Dave's rendition is just as good for Super 70s Stunt.  It has a Bob Hunt foam wing with an Ebay OS-40 FP and weighs 52 oz.  Superb stunter.  I have over 60 flights on it now.

Fantastic craftsmanship, Tom. We got to see a real T-38 at WPAFB in Dayton this summer.
How do you run your FP-40 (prop, rpm)?

Mike, I run my OS-40 FPs on GMA 10/22 with a Xoar composite 11/5 at 9800 rpm on the T-38 and Duster. For the T-38, I found a Grish clone (OTM) composite 3 blade 10/6 from Amazon.

Tom how did you like the reflex wing airfoil. Any input ??
I saw this model and the Spy plane at the flushing meadows contest. The U-2 had wing skids
And the T-38 canopy detail was exceptional and unique
He published and article on the canopy materials and details

I don't see any negatives about the T-38a airfoil.  I got lucky out here in the Phoenix area about the foam wing.  One of my friends out here had the wing from Bob Hunt and he was going to build a F-20 Tigershark, but never got to it.  So, I bought it from him.  Bob had sheeted it and installed the gear removable gear mounts.  Glad I did not have to do a built up balsa wing.  It corners with the best of the ships that I have built and flown.

Dave's articles about the T-38 are great.  Very helpful.  Joe's U-2 does have Pogo wing gear just like the real one.  I used them too and find no negatives with them either.  The fuselage main gear are unique and work well.

Dave Rees published one of the most definitive articles on cockpit detail in a seven page article in the February 1975 issue of flying models.  This is representative of the excellent work Dave Rees did.

I believe that it was the same Dave Rees who was well known in the Flying Aces community for building beautiful and very light free-flight scale models (and in that game, light weight really makes a difference!)

All of the free flight scale designs published by Dave Rees are notable.  One of his most remarkable designs was the electric powered B-36 in the August 96 issue of Flying Models.  This is a 1/4" scale 57 inch span masterpiece, 14 oz.

Amen!  Tom, can you write a description (maybe with photos) explaining how you created the landing gear detail?  Thanks!

Dennis

The gear are enclosed in Robart strut covers 107 for the nose gear. 105 works the mains.
