date code gorilla glue
« on: January 20, 2013, 04:49:23 PM »
Does anyone know how to read the date code on Gorilla glue?  I have gotten two bottles at different stores (new) that were old and barely useable.  I have used it before and know to store it upside down.

I just got off the phone with a Gorilla Glue rep.  The first two numbers of the black printed numbers on the bottle indicate the year of manufacture.  My bottles have the first two numbers as 11.  The rep said this meant the glue was manufactured in 2011.  That was too old to be on the shelf.  I should find glue that had a date starting with 12.  The newest glue has a winged cap that keeps out moisture.  If you use Gorilla Glue check the date as described.

Humm,

Mine says 10 but it worked fine last fall which is the last time I used it. Does have a winged cap though --- so much for "newest glue"!!!

According to the Mfg. website: www.gorillatough.com They recommend dampening one piece or for hard wood both pieces to assist in curing the glue joint.  They also recommend squeezing the bottle while you close it to reduce the amount of moisture in the bottle.

Do not go to www.gorillastrong,com as that is a computer repair shop!

I use so much of it I used to buy it in large bottles, but I had a 2 year hiatus during some medical problems and the stuff set.  When I started back up with the shop, I used that glue and it was fine.
You can squeeze the bottle to eliminate the air in the bottle and that's very effective.  I've never tried the upside down bit, but if there's still air in there, it will form a skin anyway.  But the skin will be on the bottom of the bottle when you turn it over.  That's a definite advantage.
Clancy, there's an additional benefit to moisture on one side of the hardwood.  Not only does it act as a bit of a catalyst, it opens the pores of the wood to allow further penetration.  With the oily exotic hardwoods, that adds a great amount of strength.  I have used it on walnut and maple without the moisture and it worked fine, but I far prefer the manufacturer's instructions.  (I was too lazy to fill my spray bottle when the stuff was ready to clamp up.)
