Other than the trip home (Garmin GPS can't keep up with all the construction on 635w.), it was a great contest. It was a little breezy, from time to time, but great fun and some super flying. Many thanks to DMMA and the (extended) Dallas cl family for a typical warm, family picnic atmosphere! Contrary to all the recent news, I didn't see one mosquito!

I can't remember all the results, but Richard Oliver was first in expert, followed by Doug and (I think) Steve Moon. Expert had 13 entries.

Had the pleasure of meeting Howard Rush. Howard took home the concours award. He is much more reserved in person than he is on the forums...really nice fellow. I certainly hope he chronicles his visit to big "D" as colorfully and eloquently as he did is sojourn to N. Dakota. (He is going to wear that Prius out!)

I didn't take any pictures, but there were plenty of cameras around, so I suspect some of them will be posted as soon as everyone rests up a bit. I am also certain someone will post the complete results soon as well.

Driving home yesterday, my onboard thermometer registered 103 F. A little farther down the road I couldn't help but notice a number of cows had waded out into a large stock tank and were standing knee deep in water in the shade of some large cottonwoods.

Stupid cows.

Trying to get a picture here....looks like I may have it. These two trophies came from the Southwest Model Airplane Championship in Dallas in 1953, sponsored by the Dallas Exchange Club. The donor for the Trophies shown are Cabell's Minute Market and TexAir. There's no plastic on these aged mementos, they weigh about two pounds, roughly. The taller is 2nd Place Half-A Speed and the other is 3rd Place Open C Speed.

We try to display these at our DMAA Dallas contests, just for the nostalgia, when control line was king. One was found in an attic and the other was donated by John Ashford.

The heat index was off the scale, but lots of ice water and soft drinks kept us all hydrated, lots of sunblock and insect repellant. Prior to the contest, there were legitimate concerns about the mosquito-driven West Nile Virus outbreak our area is enduring. After knocking down some grassy areas around pavilions and sidewalks, 24 hour insect killer was liberally applied....I saw not a single mosquito. We provided shade for our judging corps, and endeavored to make our contest a pleasant event that folks will remember and plan to attend in the future.

Thanks to Mike Scott, in particular, who stepped up to CD when Tom Farmer had to step down due to health reasons. dg

Lesseenow....Pretty much the Sunday Stunt people line up, followed by Howard "Ramblin' Man" Rush recieving his well-deserved "concours de elegance" award for his Impact (has red and green LEDs that shine in the dark) from DMAA Prez Don Hutchinson. Next should be the Sunday Stunt Airplane line up. Finally, Joey G running his Red 'Bolt/PA65 through its paces.

Here's the NATs winning combo, Doug Moon, Furias/PA65......."smokin!".....Bro Steve Moon (he's the southpaw) and his Furias/Saito 52..."smokin!"....Next we see Sgt. Sean McEntee, US Army with Legacy/LA46...."smokin!" And Frank Williams, NASA, retired with his Giles/Pletteberg ship......"NOT smokin!", if it was, there would be trouble in River City....

Whew! I'm beginning to reach the absorbancy which approaches unity.....We see Bob Redmon, first in Advanced with his electric stunter, I don't know what his ship is or powerplant, but he handles it very well. Dale McCord was 2nd Advanced, I haven't a pic of him (yet). Next pic is Steve "Southpaw" Moon (trying to develop a way to tell them apart).......Here's Richard Oliver, won the contest. When Doug Moon recieved his 2nd place Award, his caring brother consoled him saying, "don't worry, you'll catch on someday...." Finally, Mike Greb, last year's District VIII Coveted EagleTrophy winner, presents the new winner, Don Cranfill, the Coveted Eagle Award.*

District VIII awards points, six for a first place finsih, five for second, four for third, and so on, for CLPA Skillclasses ('ceptin' Beginner) to entrants in District VIII. The Coveted Award is presented to the flyer who amasses the most points at the end of the contest year. The idea was conceived by Tom Farmer as a means to boost interest in Stunt in District VIII.

The Kochers told me they have 2000 photos of our recent contest. They were kind enough to send me a sampling of them. Notably missing is Darrell Harvin, Gaylord Elling, his brother Gregg, Frank McMillan had to leave before Sunday's rounds. Perhaps we'll get more pictures of the Racing, OTS and Classic Events.

Diving and Strafing, using Dallas rules, was won by Melvin Schuette with a BiSlob/Max 35 Combo, and Steve Wolf placed second, not sure of his choice of diver/strafer.....

I don't want to steal any of Mike Scott's thunder, but I must say "Thank You" to our judges, Gary McClellan, Les Demmet, Phil Nickles, Don Hutchinson, Doug Patterson, and Stephen Jeansonne. Thanks so much to Mike Greb, ED for Racing, and Bill Bischoff, who did all the pull testing on Sunday.

Good contest, on Saturday it looked like attendance would be down, several regulars from AK, LA, and MS couldn't make it because of the hurricane, but on Sunday there were no fewer than 13 entries in expert. Judges Gary McClellan and Les Demmet really earned their pay. (As club treasurer I have authorized a bonus equal to 100% of their regular salary.)

We had an unexpected visitor on Sunday, an AT-6 (N29947, out of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum) flew by, circled the field once and then left during Steve Moon's second flight. You could hear Steve shout "That is awesome!!!!" between maneuvers.

Actually divin' 'n' strafin' (Dallas rules) was won by Steve Wolf wit' a Buster/Fox .35, with Melvin Scheutte placing second. My fault for dropping the baton (don't know if it was a baton rouge, I never saw the thing) passed to me by Dave Ek. It appears that I am definitely *not* US Marine material, which I suppose is not much of a surprise. Next year we have decided the 'Loon Bust will be flown to full FAI rules, with strict adherence to the Geneva Convention, Kyoto Accord, and the Organian Peace Treaty.

Just to set the record straight, my plane has a Discovery Retro 60 for motivation.
Doug's Walker Cup winning, NATS champion halo lasted all of one round of one
contest. He led after the first round with Richard Oliver 2nd and myself 3rd. Richard
moved up and passed Doug in the second round to get the victory.

Great fun and a really good contest. We're always happy to have 'out-of-towners'
at our contests, and it was really neat to see Howard there. With 13 flying in Expert
it was a real battle to get on the podium. And, that AT-6 Texan was not helping
at all! I was trying to look at it during my flight. I did improve by one point!

I apologize for the mix-up on Steve's motor. That's not the first time I've called that motor a Four-stroke. There's probably other mistakes, (especially on the electric setups) again, my apologies. Tom Neibhur collected all the plane/motor combinations, so his information would be correct.

The AT-6 contained DMAA member Terry Kirby, who was taking the ride that his wife had gotten him for their anniversary. Terry asked the pilot if they could circle the field, and the pilot was happy to oblige.

Great contest. The DMAA guys put on a good show. Thanks for the great pic's and showing the score boards. Had to leave before the P.A. expert rounds finished-the competition was sure close! Great job performed by Mike Scott and Tom N. I got a chance to meet "The Great Howard Rush" and all I can say is that he is a cool, neat, and nice guy, but I still don't like a PRIUS! Congrats to R.O. on the win and to D.M. too on a real close finish and to the OT and Classic winners.

Finally, the picture of Dale McCord's Red &White "Tabasco Nobler" has been found, resized, and hopefully, transferred to this post.

As to wives launching airplanes, I have it on good authority that some could be convinced to return to the practice, with the stipulation that the airplane be electric.....no oil, no smoke, no noise..... yada, yada, yada....

Many, many thanks to the Kocher Team, Fred and Steve, for enabling the pictures Ol'Dad posted. There are still more than 1500 left, but I think everyone gets a good glimpse of the atmosphere at our contest.
