Title: Cox rod question
Post by: Russell Shaffer on March 16, 2006, 06:38:00 PM
How loose can the rod to piston joint get before there is a problem?  I have several old .049's that click when flipped over.  It's not that they are valuable, so how long can I run them before they hand grenade?

Another source for the reset tool is Davis Diesel.
The rods do need to be reset and it's pretty simple to do with the right tool.  Joey would know more since I suspect he has raced or ran some in speed, but I have been told that it doesn't take much slop to affect performance.  I reset a couple of mine and need to see what effect it had.

I have the tool, and it does make a difference in how they run. They seem to have more power after you use the tool on them

The re-set tool is great in improving performance if you don't go too far.  I know from experience.  But, it only takes a couple of runs to get them working.  DOC Holliday

You can run them with a loose rod until the rod comes out through the piston top.  Then you should stop.
