Hello
 I recently acquired about a dozen Cox engines in a package deal. I never was into 1/2 A very much so I am not familar with all the different models.I was wondering if any one knew of a web site that explained the different types and models.Thanks for any help you all can give me.

The first link below is the best site I know of for Cox engine info, but the .049 Collectors forum is also a great source of info and photos of Cox, and many other 1/2A engines (second link).

If you picked up any Cox Medallion .049 engines in the deal, I may be interested in buying one or more from you. I have a new in the box Medallion, but I'm not about to use that one for sport flying.

Now you need to buy a Brodak Baby Clown kit (or ARF), and fly the heck out some of those engines!  y1

Hi Tom,

Glad those links were of some help to you. I check both of them regularly for updates, and find new info most of the time. The .049 Collectors forum in particular, has new pictures and messages added almost daily.

Got your PMs, and look forward to hearing more about your recently purchased engines. Sounds like you have everything you need for some real fun 1/2A sport flying.

Thanks for the offer, mate. I may take you up on that some day.  :)

I'm planning to use one of my Norvel .049 engines on the Baby Clown, but would also like to try a Tee Dee, and a Medallion some day, to see how well they can be set up. Current Cox used engine prices have put me off a bit, but I've no doubt some will turn up locally.

The Norvel engines were a bargain as you know, so those will be my first engine choice, and perhaps the only engine I use for 1/2A, if they are as good as I've heard.

What line length would you recommend for the Baby Clown/Norvel combination here at sea level? Think I'll start with the 52' .008 stranded lines, and shorten them if necessary. The only other lines available are 35', and I believe you said that was more suited to the reed valve Cox engines.

That looks like a winner!

Original, Brodak kit, or scratch built?

Thinking I should modify the nose on my ARF to take the beam mounted engine I'm going to use, rather than using an after market beam to radial mount, mounted on the Brodak radial mounts provided.

Brodak plans and scrap wood, one of three. 

I think a TeeDee 049 will be just right.  The way they pull 150 sq in combat wing, it might still be too fast.  A set of .008 x 42's should keep it in sight.

We fly our reed valve ones on 35's but the Norvel powered one (pictured) is much more suited to my 44' lines here at sea level.

Hi, Guys -  I have met Tom Perry and he is extremely knowledgeable regarding Cox engines. Also, a fellow named Larry Renger seems to have a great deal of experience..

I have two sets of .008 lines comming from Joe and Sebra at SS Hobbies, plus the rest of the goods I need to get a Baby Clown ARF in the air. Also picked up one of the new beam mount Baby Clown ARFs, so I don't have to double mount the Norvel engines. Also ordered some APC 5.7"X3" props for the Norvel.

I'm tempted to try the 52' lines first, to avoid being screwed into the ground.   ;D

The Norvel .049 won't screw you into the ground on 42' lines, or even 35' although you might turn a little faster than is comfortable.  The .061 is a different story; it's a different animal altogether.  My .061 combat wings will hit 75mph MOL.  Work out the lap times; that's under 2.5 sec. on 42' lines; around 2 sec. flat on 35'.  A bit much.   But the .049 won't approach that.  42' is plenty long.

All the above IMO of course.

Well, that's very interesting, and certainly welcome information.

I'm hearing line lengths suggested from 35' to 48', and some claim to have flown similar combinations with up to 52' of line length. Confusing to say the least.

Since I haven't flown C/L in a good number of years, it might be best for me to start them on the long side, but I've no idea what the practical maximum might be.

The 35' .008 braided lines that I've ordered leave no guess work on my part, but the second set of 52' lines can be made up to something less of course, but how much less?

Any opinions welcome!  ;D
