How many of you are prone to use the standard hardware package that comes in a kit from a manufacturer such as RSM or Brodak (ie bellcrank, leadouts, pushrods, etc.) or would you rather provide your own or use something like a Tom Morris System?

Hi Mike I prefer using my own choice of internals. Even though the kit guys do a good job ,I like to build my own. Thanks Tom Tilley AMA 56944

I use Tom Morris cranks, carbon/fiberglass rods with 4-40 inserts and ball links. On everything. Including sport profiles. The stuff in kits wobble. Also I prefer suspended cranks, with location points top and bottom. Stronger. More clearance for the rods and wires.

I will use what is in the kit as much as possible, but will make some effort to make it better and / or stronger if I see the need. My planes usually don't last 100 flights due to inadvertent contact with the ground.

I have been using Sig 4 inch bellcranks, drilled for slower controls and fabricating my own control horns.
With that said, Tom Morris' controls are top notch and I would not hesitate to use them. Its just that I'm a cheapskate and I can set the geometry up to my liking if I do it myself.

Tom Morris or Dan Winship controls. Tom's stuff is available from CLC, also.

I've used the components in RSM kits but not Brodak.....otherwise it's only Tom Morris controls.

Kinda what I was wondering too,, and from what I read he has not completed any of his in progress control line models either,, ( apparently lots of RC stuff though) so I wonder perhaps CB can show us his other Tom Morris control installations,, Though this would show that he has done some research since he recognizes Tom Moriss control systems as a good thing?

I use TM components on my competition stunters. Sport planes often get Sig or Brodak hardware. CF pushrods are used in all. I suppose the next question would be: How many are willing to spend and extra $50.00 (??) or so per kit to get complete TM controls ie: CF rods, titanium rod ends, slider elevator horn etc. I for one have enough top quality components set aside that I'd prefer the lower kit price and to supply my own hardware.

Suggestion for Mike: Continue offering kits w/out hardware. Make available two grades of hardware packages that can be bought separate from the kit. One would be the full Tom Morris setup, the other a lesser priced package using good quality useable components from Brodak and/or RSM. Just a thought.

It would have to be good HDWE for me to use what comes out of the box.

Started a Flite Streak, I don't think I'll use the HDWE.

Strange, I have several Flite Streak kits regular and combat that have no hardware. Maybe someone used the hardware before selling me the kits. I thank them as in the day it was Veco bellcranks and Dynamic control horns.

I prefer to have hardware as part of the kit. So much easier to use what came with kit rather than trying to gather all the right components (mail order) and time. I would also hope that hardware included would be of decent quality. Just me.

The coyotes around here have learned, that even though they can't actually catch a deer, they chase it around until it runs out in front of a semi.....and they gleefully eat the gory mess that's left. P/S I use what comes in a kit if it's correct to the type plane. Sometimes I make my own crank.

Smart observation. You know exactly where that photo came from and Tom's name was never mentioned.

what FS kit do you have, who is the manufacture?

and I find it interesting that despite your own self admission that you have been away so long, you speak as though you are an authority on hardware? How do you know what is good and what isnt,, I am curious

Sig cranks and build my own horns. I far prefer the 1/8" drill rod I use to the hardened stuff in most available manufacturers stuff.

I, for a time, built my own horns using Bobby Hunt's techniques. Silver BRAZING he brass to the wire, etc.. Worked a treat! But now, I am running out of time (as we all are! LOL!!) and like the fact that some one else is will to do it so that I can just "drop it in" with only some work on the ends of the pushrods to be done.

Depending on what I have at hand, and the model, I happily use Windy's BCs, Sig 4", 3", and both sizes of the Brodak BC., plus those from Bobby Hunt and Dan Winship. But I do use mainly only the CF pushrods, rod ends and ball links from TM/CLC.
