I am not sure, but I am looking for 30# test lines to fly with, the model is 25 powered R/Master that I want ti try braided lines on. I need all the help/advice/suggestions that I can get.
Also where can I get the braided lines as Bass Pro Shops doesn't have it locally, so I need to shop around.. thanks

Note that the AMA charts states .25 sized models between 25oz and 40oz should be flown on 40lb test.

Yes, try Walmart. Even ours had bunches of "braided" (it isn't) Spectra line just yesterday. I'm shocked that BPS doesn't have any of the many good brands.

YES, get 40 lb test...it's what the AMA requires for a .25 CID engine. I got some "Vermillion", thinking it would be more visible on grass than the typical dark green or yellow (dry grass color!).

Depending on you locality....COVID and ANTIFA caused a run on many items

guns n ammo was to be expected
TP we know about and did not make sense
But interestingly, many areas sold out of most fishing gear

That is the God's honest truth right there. As you know, I take the kids fishing frequently. Well, the Walmart has been dwindling on gear. Last run was almost not worth going. But daviny found a new pink rod, so that made up for it!

Fellows I'm obliged to all the help, now I am looking for some 20# Yellow power pro braided line for some small models.. Got any idea as to where to look.. Again obliged, Bubba tried power pro, smallest size was 30#

I just bought some at the local fishing store. I got the moss green because it costs less. I'm using it for a different project. The yellow stuff in 50 lb is what I've used for control lines.

WOW! Does AMA now sanction Spectra type lines for anything save Combat? If this is so what's the preferred knot for tying these things off? Did we really get approval for this material? Inquiring mind wants to know!

Phill, grab yourself a fishing book that has braided line knots that won't slip or let go. ( Better still get a buddy to take you fishing and learn a few knots while catching a feed!) Spectra line is great for flying and fishing. Light strong durable and no fuss compared to steel. Don't be tempted to go too light though. Perhaps grab what should be ok for the load and go a little thicker or a few kilos stronger. Flouro is great to see on the grass. Green is a bugger.

I have now flown two 25 size planes on 80 pound test lines with good results for me. May order some 60 pound in the future. By the yellow makes for walking the lines in the grass.

I just got a spool of 80lb test Spectra Lines. It is not thick or heavy at all.

I did some over kill. My biggest engines are 46's.

I made the switch to fishing line a while ago and fell in love with it. Try it and draw your own conclusions. I have a spool of .015” steel line that is handy to make a set of new lines. But, the fishing lines are superior . They are about as carefree as is possible! NO KINKS from unseen hazards, rough pavement, weeds, and misplaced feet.

Like steel lines, they too require pull testing and routine inspecting.

If they were competition legal I would be using them. My only problems were getting stepped on and having the spool unravel into a Birds Nest! Other that that they are superior to steel IMHO.

The more of us that use the new fishing lines and prove they are competition safe the sooner they will be allowed in competition events.

Brett has a proposed change, although not directly related to "fishing line" will solve the problem and a bunch of others. I hope it passes.

I don't think the AMA requires anything per engine size right now - they aren't legal at all in stunt, and I don't think combat specifies them by engine size.

For sport flying, you can do anything you want as long as it passes a pull test - 10Gs, by default.

By the way, as some have already noted, there is braid and there is braid. Be careful to buy a good / reputable brand, the fishos know! It is usually more expensive, smoother, tighter weave with clearly visible individual ( up to 7 ..1 in the centre, 6 around the outside) minicables. Some of the cheaper stuff looks like rough strands or shreds of plastic material twisted into a line, no real structure or form. Its wears and breaks easily. And remember - you MUST learn to tie non slip knots as normal knots will simply let go, and the last guy you need to visit you is Murphy when you're doing doing your overhead eights. Good flying and tight lines!

This has been a really interesting thread! I consulted with an old friend of knowledge about these things and learned that Spectra lines, with CD approval, is allowed in Unofficial Events! These would be, OTS, N-30, Profile Stunt events but not PA! Several years ago, now about 13 when I still lived in western PA I flew Spider Wire lines on an old Sterling Mustang powered by an OS FP .25! The light lines proved miraculous! At that time Spectra was allowed in Combat competition of all things! How and why would the AMA permit Spectra lines in Combat of all things and not permit these in tame old Stunt? this seems illogical to me! But I'll try to acquire some of this stuff just for sport flying as it is so much lighter and offers much less resistance to the air and to ham footed associates!

Because no one has written a rule proposal that passed. The AMA is not doing anything, it's the contest board. There has been one proposal to permit Spectra lines in stunt that was not accepted because of issues discussed at length earlier.

I put in a proposal for 2021 that removed all references to required materials, which also permits Spectra lines. That one will not be voted on until 2021 because the AMA delayed any CB actions by one year due to Wuhan Flu. We will see if that one passes.

In almost all cases where the question is "why doesn't the AMA do something about...?!" the answer is "because no one bothered to pursue the matter using the existing processes". Virtually everything about AMA rules is under control of the members. Same thing when it's "Why doesn't PAMPA do something about ... !?"
