Control line version of OS .10LA
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:32:38 AM »
Hi Guys,

Did this version ever come out?

I'm asking because I have an RC version that I would like to convert to CL, if possible. Are parts available somewhere?

I have the throttle wired wide open but I think it's not the best solution for the akromaster.

Thanks,

-Dan

The LA 10 is not made as a C/L engine. No factory parts are available for a conversion. The OS10FP backplate or venturi does not fit and The propriatery needle valve assembly has been unobtainable for a few years. You can get a venturi from Lee machine shop.
Some will tell you that the venturi and nva from the OS15FP can be used and while they fit they are not a great conversion.
The conversion if you get good working parts is definitely worth the effort.

That  would be a remote needle valve assembly, correct?

The carb retaining screws listed for the LA 10 are M3 so there is a very good possibility that the NVA from the FP 15 will fit. Plenty of people can make you a venturi and Tower lists the FP 15 NVA—and the FP 15 venturi, but you will need to check the size.

If the LA 10 crancase is not as wide as the 15 at the point where the NVA goes through, a spacer washer should put the hole in the NVA in the right place. I don't know whether the FP 15 venturi is an appropriate size inside or out.

The FP 10 NVA is 4mm dia where it locates in the crankcase and venturi so it will not fit unless you drill out the crankcase and venturi—that's assuming that you could find the parts.

I've been going through the conversion issues with an FP10. The FP15 venturi and needlevalve fit. I assume that the needlevalve is centered similarly to the FP15, since the venturi insert is the same size. Of course the FP15 needlevalve may not be fine enough to needle well. I haven't tried to run the engine yet. I thought the FP10 would be a great match for a junior streak. I've flown these with FP15s, an absolute hoot. But obviously over powered. Also in need of tail weight to help the plane turn. Even tho I used a light tongue muffler. Only way to go.

Good info Dennis.

My FP 10 started life as an FP-S with the rear needle. I replaced the RN setup because I could not get it to seal. No matter what I did, there were air bubbles in the fuel line. After fiddling for a while, I simply replaced the RN setup with the correct needle through the venturi.

I measured the venturi that came with it—6.0mm ID. The Tower web site says 6.0mm ID for the FP 15 venturi. If that's correct, you are almost certainly good to go.

I was a bit surprised but as I said above, the spraybar is 4mm OD—necked down across the venturi. I think the NVA may have originated in the 10 FSR.

Based on your info and some desk research, it seems that your conversion should be good.

Hi Geoff,

You are correct, the OS .10FP NVA as used first on the OS .10FSR.  It has taken me quite a while to find those NVA (along with a lot of luck).  The needle is black with no "spring" as other modern OS Needles.

Bill,
I think quite awhile translates into a few years searching .
