Control Line Frozen Lake Flying ....ViDEO
« on: February 11, 2017, 01:55:17 PM »
It has been quite a while....really since Nov. 7...since I have gotten a whole pattern flight.
Flew twice on New Years Day but never got through the pattern as the engine died on Primary Force.
So the weather has warmed a bit and the lack of snow has put the lake in pretty good condition to go down and attempt a few flights on the electric Brodak P-40 using the RSM Sport .46 electric package.
Just trying to get through the pattern here so no need to feel like you have to give me a critique. I know it was marginal!
Trying to get my muscle memory and groove back and get a CL video out. My CL videos are getting more and more hits on You tube.
But boy, did it feel fun to get out and fly some CL.

Living in New Orleans it is hard to find a frozen lake to fly off of.  However, I could put some pontoons on it and fly off a bayou.

Wonderful video Shug....you da man...

My airplanes have never seen those kind of temperatures.

Just got off the phone with Eric Rule Shug,  Eric says he remembers those days when he lived in Canada and that is why he moved to Southern California.  We were also discussing if you had to use ether to get that baby started.  We were wondering how that electric fuel does in those temperatures and if you had to warm the electrons to get that puppy running.   Eric and I have a very warped sense of humor.  n~ n~ n~7

Eric did not get to be the number one smart ass in stunt by accident.  I am just a smart ass as I don't fly stunt anymore.   Again,  really a neat video Shug....

Watched it with my son. He watches all you backpack videos. He took me for a hang last fall and dang near killed this old man. We did 14 miles and part of it was like the fiery gizzard trail in Tennessee. Hard trail but some great views and water falls. We will do one more trip this spring but it will be a short hike. 😝

I like the CL videos but the backpacking ones are funny.

We use to fly off the ice skating pond behind East Junior HS in Binghamton NY in the 1950's Flying  was easy, starting the motor was the hard part. Water was only 10" deep so no need to worry about falling in.

There used to be a fly in for full size aircraft at a lake called Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire when the lake froze thick enough.

I flew over it one time, a low pass just about on the frozen lake, but didn't put the plane down. I never liked winter activities except to ski.

The plane I had was a Lake LA4 200T which was actually built not far from that lake.

The real fun was this lake in Old Sturbridge Village‎, MA. Had a great restaurant and the owner welcomed seaplanes.

They had a large dock to taxi up to but was really for boats.

People liked it when planes came in and many said "Great landing," to the pilot.

You could eat outside and inside.

I never put the plane on ice or in salt water.

A balsa scale model of the Lake LA4 200 was produced but I cannot remember by who?

Mr. G's Models produced a R/C Widgeon and the Republic Sea Bee. Fiberglass fuselage and parts plus Foam wings.

I built them both but never flew them in water.

I will build another Widgeon.

Thanks. I hope this season gives me time to really put some time into the pattern. Last Summer I was very busy on the road with my shows and it cut into stunt.

Shug I should know this but where in MN?

My brief 23 months in Fridley going to Spring lake park Jr HS was very memorable as my dad commanded Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant

First in life Dove hunt
First in Life BIG ass fish caught...Tiger muskellunge @42"....on a Target Red devil and el cheapo rod reel rig
First in life playing Ice hockey
First in life Ice fishing ( in a hut)....brrrrrr
First in life pitched over board out of lake boat on Lake Winnibigoshish with 8 foot swells

I absolutely was distracted by the back ground ---so had to watch twice to see Your flight....grin

Thanks Shug..

Great video as usual, but as I must be getting old, any thing below 60 degrees F, is too cold.  I want to se another video of you flying from that same spot in 3 months. LL~ LL~ H^^

Very impressive, especially your Carl impression.  After watching this they should change to saying to: "Why don't you START acting like a clown?"

Did you know how to juggle and ride the unicycle before clown college?

I love the movie Sling Blade:::::
I could juggle and unicycle prior to Clown college but improved so much after. Like going to stunt school.

In 1974 I rode a wheelie on my motorcycle on the beach in Daytona for a mile. (according the ticketing officer- $32.00 fine)  However, I could not ride a unicycle.

Hey, whats the idea of leaving us out?  4 flights and nothing, not even a joke?

Do you fly mostly by yourself?

The reason I ask, is that there nobody to fly with in my town.
Actually 6 flights. Alone...well, just me and my stooge!

I used to get out and fly when there was snow/ice on the field and the temps were in the 20's.  Getting old I guess as now I have to think about it even if temps are in the 50's.  I miss John Bender calling me and saying, "Lets go fly".   D>K

My Glory Daze...thank you.

Shug, I must say your actions have inspired me in a way probably not intended.  I have, pretty much, quit C/L because I have nobody to fly with.   After seeing you fly in the freezing cold on a frozen lake, I realize my thinking is pretty lame.

I need to get me a "Moe" and get my back side out there and fly..

Thanks.

You can add to your list of titles, "Great Inspiration."
I hope you do. I got a couple flights in today at a ball field. Gotta get ready for Stunt Season!
