Control-line fly-in at Daytona?
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:35:03 PM »
A friend of mine who is big into giant scale 3D, and is also getting his feet wet in CL invited me out to a BBQ at the Daytona RC club for some flying.  I've flown there before, but not in front of the crowd that was there today. After I put in the one flight (my landing gear ripped out on landing due to a wheel and wheelpant flying off) I was approached with the idea of a Control-line fun-fly at the RC club. I thought it would be a great idea. The only downside is the area where I flew is that it's  BARELY big enough for 60' lines.

Anybody in the Daytona region possibly interested in this? Here is the thread on Flying Giants about the idea.

Matt,

I read the link and saw that they have club members with at least a couple of Ringmasters!!! Maybe you could encourage them to have a "Fun Fly" next month by participating in the Annual Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon (Oct 5th and 6th)!!! I will email you (also attach here) a file for the flyer with the rules that you can forward to them.

I don't know who was responsible, but the KCRC club started that a couple of years ago for just control line only.  No RC until we were done and loaded up.   It was amazing how many new RC's flyer had never seen what a control line plane was capable of.   They really liked the combat wings.  Now we have an area big enough for CL and last two years the Minor lads have held F2D contests there.   This year did not even need the RC runway.

Guys here is a great chance to get more exposure and maybe pick up a few retreads. If i was closer i would attend.  How cool would it be for the Tampa boys and Jacksonville gang meet there and put on a show. Bi-slobbing also gets the RC guys attention.

Way to go Matt!

Hey, I'm about an hour from Daytona (Mount Dora). I'd like to participate in this and get to meet some new people around here. Let me know some dates and if Fred is back from upta camp he'd probably attend as well.

I asked about the KOI before and got NO responses. I thought the KOI was history. I vote for a venue other than Whitehouse Field.

I personally think Whitehouse is one of the best flying sites I've ever flown at. The air is so clean you could fly in a hurricane and I would be ok with it.

Well some are not used to flying in anything over 10 mph, which is just a draft here in my part of the country. LL~ LL~ LL~

Hey Tuscon has its drawbacks also.  I remember one year not getting a flight in Classic.  Was in the pit area holding my plane and pit box down to keep them from blowing away.   But, then I still remember the great times when it was just stunt weather.   Not too hot.  Breeze just enough to get rid of turbulence.  The best is the people that fly there.

Mike ,what makes Tucson great is the camaraderie, that go's on after hrs . now that they have added more pavement at the end of the runway whitehuse is a super flying site.  it doesn't seem to have thermals come through and the weather is pretty much the same ALL day long  no need to worry about dust devils like the one that ruined my canopy in Tucson. whitehouse will never have the ha ha ( cant think of the word) that t Tucson has .but for flying ,as good or better .and the Few guys that run the KOI do a great job.

Yesterday I went with a couple good friends of mine to an RC field in the Orlando area.  I was told that there was enough room to fly there so I grabbed the Vector, and a Skyray trainer I'm storing for one of those good friends along with my RC stuff. After flying 3D for most of the afternoon, I brought the Vector out for a demo flight. Some of the older RC gents that were there kept saying how they used to have those Cox CL .049 aircraft and they played around with them in the backyard, or driveway.

Andrew was the first one to get a flight on the skyray (since it's his airplane) and he instantly started doing loops, inverted flight, lazy 8s and outside loops.  Also, the bottoms were right at 5ft as well!!  After he flew, I took a friend up for his first flight ever on CL, he was solo almost instantly, but got a little bit dizzy during the end of the flight.  I guided him through a loop, then had him do one on his own, and the plane lived on for another flight.

The next guy to try CL out was Stephen Washington. He said he tried CL at Joe Nall so he went off on his own, takeoff, climbs and dives, loops, and pancaking the airplane after taking a wrong step and got himself dizzy doing so. The only damage to the airplane was a snapped off rudder and a broken prop.

It was definitely a great day out at the field, flying both RC and CL. I got my first taste at flying a 107" 3D plane, and loved it! It is true what they say, bigger is better. Teaching those two new friends about CL was incredibly fun, especially during a couple handle transfers.

Can't wait to do it again hopefully next weekend!!!

Where is the field you went to? I only know of one field in Apopka, not sure if they would allow CL. I'm looking for an 'official' place to fly nearby.

The one I went to has never had a CL plane fly. It was big enough for 60ft lines, and nothing bigger. The field wasn't in Apopka, it was in the Oviedo area. I forget where exactly, but it's an RC field in the middle of a cow pasture with barbed wire fence around it
