A trip to a National Cemetery
« on: November 11, 2010, 01:01:51 PM »
In honor of Veterans Day my wife Pat and I took a drive to Marion, IN.

Her Uncle Lou, who served in the US Army in WWII, Korea and during Vietnam, is buried at the Marion National Cemetery in Marion, IN.  When we arrived we were upset by the condition of the buildings that used to be the Veterans Hospital and Old Soldiers Home.  It closed several years ago and the buildings are fenced off and being allowed to deteriorate.  The newest building which was built to match the original buildings still looks serviceable but the older buildings have holes in the roofs and the wooden parts are falling in.  The basic design was a two story brick building with wood entryways.

We then proceeded to her uncle's grave site.  Our attitude improved as we saw the effort being made to preserve the National Cemetery.  All of the grave markers are being reset to the proper height and they are using chalk lines in both directions to align the stones in rank and file.  They had just finished the section that Uncle Lou's grave is in.  They had the the chalk lines stretched out for the next section of 10 x 12 markers.  One marker in the section Uncle Lou is in was damaged.  They removed it and a temporary marker is there until a new stone can be prepared and set.

Sorry I did not take a camera with us.

It is always a sight to see a military cemetary.  The one in south St Louis area is where I have a brother and sister-in-law.
