Started a new project this weekend.
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:51:42 AM »
We had rain Saturday plus some work around the house kept me away from the flying field.  While waiting for plywood sheeting and engine mounts on my new RSM Ringmaster to cure I had some spare time so I started my second VSC-XX project.  I plan to fly the Ringmaster in Classic and the Lil Duper-Zilch in sparky competition.

A few months back I bought a Mecoa replica of the Foster .29 from Larry Renger AKA Designman.  A couple of weeks ago Larry offers me the Lil Duper-Zilch kit, I guess he wants me to use the Foster.  How could I say no to a free kit?  So sure I take the kit and commit to building it.  That was before I opened the kit and found it was all print wood and lots of sticks.  Well I had some time and a new scroll saw and lots of new #11 blades so I started.  I got to tell you I really had fun cutting out the parts, it took me back to when I was a kid building Comet kits using my dads discarted Gillette blue blade razors.  Only this was much better I cut the balsa parts just off the blue lines and then sanded to the lines.  The scroll saw made short work of the plywood and thicker balsa parts.  I bagged all the parts and made a kit which I will start assembling ASAP.  Because the plans are copies of Bill Effinger's original Berkley kit I didn't want to damage them, so I took them over to Kinkos and had three copies made.  I told the guy and Kinkos please be careful with the original it would be very hard to get it replaced.  I don't think the company who made the kit is still in business and I know Berkley is out of business.  Anyway as the Zilch starts to shape up I will post pictures.

One last thing I use to fly Old Time Free Flight so running spark engines is not new to me and this engine will use a transistor ignition module and rechargeable battery's.  Any suggestions regarding the ignition competition at VSC will be greatly appreciated. I watched it this past year and noticed some funny engine runs.  My concern is these engines were designed for short duration FF operation not controline.  Normally I would use gasoline and motor oil, but I noticed most flyer's at VSC were using glow fuel.  I wonder if it was because glow fuel runs cooler for the longer controline runs?

I'll let Jim Kraft answer as he has won two years in a row.  I think anyone that get a decent run and a complete pattern can place.  I haven't got my stuff up and running yet.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday
