Title: Continental (pics) Finished
Post by: RC Storick on June 19, 2008, 06:42:26 PM
The next plane in my sites is a XL Minado to match this plane. I hope that this planes inspires a youngster as much as it did me in 1970.

I love the bug effect on the front fillet in the forth picture! Oh , whoops, just a fly landed.   ;D

Looks really nice Bob. Should present very well in the air. Hope it flies as well for you as it looks.

Pete,

Just take a look at Phil Granderson's latest. Makes me cringe to look at my stuff.

Robert,

This is a true modern day makeover of a Classic!  Excellent work!  y1 I think Tom would be very pleased and proud to have inspired the Continental XL.

My all time favorite classic is Ed Southwick's Lark.  I have one hanging on the wall that I built back in '86.  Often think of updating to a tuned pipe version.  Maybe some day.

Thanks for the memories.

Phil,
Bill Byles did exactly this this many years ago while Ed S. was around and often flying with Bill.  Beautiful job also as is of course usual with Bill's work.
It was an excellent flier.

There is a strong resemblance to Lampione's 1969 Nats winning UNITED

I went to Sig this weekend so I finished this on Monday. While at SIG I bought some wood for the next one. I will be building one more of these with few changes to make it look more like the original plane.I did have some problems with the clear urethane solvent popping so the finish is not perfect. However I learned my lesson. Look for the Continental XL II after the NATS. If this one flies good I will be taking this one. If not its my Bolt.

Looking forward to seeing this one!

Bumping this thread back up to bolster a point Bill Biles asked about in another thread. I would be interested in a set of plans or working drawings for this model also. I haven't seen it in person yet, but I do like the overall presentation of it. It's a Geo XL wing, lost foam version, correct? The only other thing needed is just good fuse and stab numbers. I haven't tried that complex of a paint job yet, but it is striking. The T-bolts are neat, but I think this is ahead of them. I'll catch you at Buder soon maybe and talk about it some more.
   Type at you later,
  Dan  McEntee

Note Fitz did what?

Go a little smaller for lighter weights.  Extremely light planes with GEO Bolt wings are going to be 60 oz.
