Ty i agree it is to hot for a contest here may thu sept. up untill now we have been flying at a ball field but some fellows from back east moved out here and they (Rueben and Steve MacBride) worked it out with the rc club at bill bennett field for us to have a circle. i have never entered a stunt contest like most of the guys that fly here in vegas we are just sport flyers but i want to support there efforts in getting us a circle. so look for a contest in vegas it is not makebelive.

It would be neat if held the weekend after the Golden State Stunt Champs (mid-late October), IMO. I could spend a few days at my brothers in Ridgecrest, then tootle on over to LV for another contest. Death Valley was T-shirt/Sweatshirt weather in October at that time...i.e., perfect for another contest. Then, one must ask what events will be flown, asphalt or dry lake, and how much is the entry fee... #^ Steve

Well If I can borrow a plane I would show if I can afford it. Get to stop and see pops. Maybe not many more contets left for him.

i will update here on the the when and the type of circle. Sparky i am sure we can come up with somthing that you can fly probly somthing you have already flown.

Bill if we have a nice flat black top i am sure that would be in the cards. but right now i know for sure we have an area to fly controline how much gets a black top or if it is already there i don't know yet. i was told sometime in feb we can start flying there and them i can let you know. i like jacks idea of a contest in late oct at the same time the nhra is in town.

Topeka found that having their contest the same time as the big NHRA event was bummer since all of the places to stay were gone, or the prices were jacked sky-high. Of course Topeka is a much smaller town the Las Vegas. :-)

October sounds good to me. Racing CAN be run over grass, nobody around here has done that in a while though that I know of. Just remember the Virgil Wilbur Memorial speed/racing, usually the third weekend.

Provisional "yes" depending heavily on when it was. Scheduling is everything and you would want to make sure you had a date that was well-separated from the local contests in an expanded drawing area. That would actually be pretty tough, I would think.

You are more than welcome to fly my SV-11 at the LV contest. The silence may throw off your rhythm, but I think you will manage OK. :) I'll just get one of the club members to bring his MC and we will keep it running while you fly. ;)

when i get more info i will post it here. anyone who knows me will think that it is going to be a speed contest and i sure would love to have one here in vegas but i think it will only be a stunt contest for now. should have more info in a few weeks i am thrilled that we will be able to fly on a circle that is not a ball field.

Add another provisional "yes". It's going to be all about the time of year. I'd love a Vegas contest, but I simply cannot leave town during the height of the air conditioning season (usually late May through August). Same reason I will never be able to attend a July NATS.

For those who have never been around the desert, it's not as bad as it might seem. "Its a dry heat" is not just something the Pheonix Chamber of Commerce came up with to delude people. It really does work like that. I can almost guarantee that 105 degrees in Vegas would feel less oppressive than 85 in the Midwest. Same thing around here (South Bay) - it regularly gets over 100 degrees and while it's pretty warm, it's not unlivable. We fly in it all the time in the summer and its perfectly doable.
100 degrees in Muncie (or over 100 and 80% humidity like it was at the 93 NATs in Lawrenceville) is pretty miserable.
You do have to drink A LOT of liquids, and the dehydration can really sneak up on you. You don't get drenched with sweat pretty much no matter how hot it gets so you aren't as aware of it as you might be elsewhere.

Also of concern in the desert is the wind. Often it is measured in fractions of an inch which refers to the size of the grains of sand blowing across the road at a high rate of speed. A 1/64" wind is no problem but when it gets to a 1/4" wind, well, better stay inside.
When I lived and worked out there people would say to me "Officer, (which was my name back then) does the wind always blow this hard out here?" I'd answer: "No, ma'am, sometimes it blows even harder. LL~ The good news is that it is seasonal, Spring usually being the windy season. 8)

just got some more info we will hold the contest in the middle of august no flying untill it is above 115 degrees flying wire shall be .033 solid and one wire is all that is allowed. prop must be single blade. LL~

I voted yes, but it depends on if I win the big one. LL~ LL~The wife won a four day trip to Vegas several year ago. First day there was the juice energy bar before the hotel would let us check in. Then a trip to the Canyon via helicoptor for a picnic. Was not comfortable with the trip over the lake. She had me going from sun up til I would drop. Such a crowd in the evenings. Being on foot did not get away from the casinos and hotels. Forgot to tell her about the topless show she scheduled for us to see until the ladies came out. Coming home was the thriller as after we got on the ground at Denver she asked where the bus station was. Did not notice the high temps but did notice the mist sprays out side of the hotel entrances. We got lost at the MGM Grand.

Although the date has not been announced yet, the Indy Cars will be closing the 2011 season in Vegas. This is great for race fans like me, but could possibly cause more hotel problems.
Please say to Rueben and Steve. We old GSCB people go back a long way.

Doc THAT WAS FUNNY, Tom i will pass along the info to Rueben and Steve and vegas rarely runs out of rooms, i believe the boulder station and fiesta casinos would be the nearest place to stay from the flying field that is located next to sam boyd stadium. i hope that when they decide on a date that it does not conflict with a speed contest in cali. looks like i am going to have to learn to do some tricks.

Bill Bennett R/C field has room for 3 paved circles, and a grass practice circle. A Shaded shelter area and room for plenty on EZ up tents. recomended. Parking and Toilet on grounds. This is a beautifully site to hold a contest. Bill bennett is the forgotten man in Vegas. He was the owner of Circus Hobbies and Circus, Circus casino. He provided this site years ago. Hotels in the area for the wives to enjoy the trip.(Slot machines and Great shows.) Discounts will be available. Events to be held would start off with stunt and is open for suggestions. We are just trying to build up Control line in Vegas to go along with the very popular R/C flying. As a past 50 year member of the Garden State Circle Burners I have experience running a contest and would do my very best to make this event one to enjoy. Once we know a date, suggestions welcome I hope I get the support. Control line modelers are the greatest people I know.

Thanks Reuben, i am about like a fish out of water talking about stunt. i do feel that if we were to have a speed contest it would not suffer any from me being the cd as that is where my experiance is. so there you go guys no you know that it will not be in the summer time and the cd knows his stuff. i guess i will enter in the contest also i have level flight mastered. now just need to learn how to do tricks on purpose. hope some of you come and would like to put a face to the name.

Certainly would....as long as it would include OTS, and not be held in October (same month as Tucson's 1/2A multi-engine profile scale contest).
