Source for empty cans?

Four or five years ago there was a post on Stunthangar about a source for buying empty cans to put fuel in.  At the time I bought a couple of gallon cans, a couple 1/2 gallon cans, and a couple of quart cans.  After moving, I can't find the cans.  I've tried searching this forum, but I can't find the thread.  Can anyone point me to the thread or the source of the cans.

    I don't recall any such thread, but there are plenty of places to get cans. I saw gallon cans at Ace hardware the other day, and lots of places to order them:

   What you want is an "F-Style metal jug",  probably.


There are also numerous plastic varieties for lab chemicals that might be an even better idea. You get on McMaster or similar, it's dangerous to go browsing, there are lots of great things you can get.

To add to what Brett said, make sure if you find F style cans that they are NOT  food grade. Model fuel will eat up the food grade sealant in the flange seams. I also work for a laboratory and had access to both natural and opaque polyethylene Nalgene containers to use for fuel. Within 2 years the containers were splitting and the caps were shattering. We all use polyethylene fuel jugs without this happening so I don't know what is in the Nalgene bottles that deteriorates but from experience don't waste your money on them.

Mark....previously I had looked for some jugs similar to the Cool Power jugs.

This company has a lot more jugs etc than this one so you can look around a bit.
For fuel storage this one seems to be pretty robust.

I'm liking ex-antifreeze jugs, but you need to be wary of the handle/neck area if you want to use the mustard pump like I do. Some jugs have the neck constricted so the pump won't fit through.

Recently, I went flying and found a jug of SIG fuel had splits in it and leaked badly. What had been a near full jug became a 1/4 jug or less before I noticed. Probably some dead grass in the pit area at the park. Ooops! IMO, plastic doesn't last, so buy metal cans. I have been saving those, too.  Steve

I buy acetone, methanol, and other harmful stuff from Home Depot.  They come in one gallon metal cans built to contain strong stuff.
Thus far, they have worked well enough for CAB dope, gasoline, two cycle mix and glow fuel.

You should be able to buy the gallon metal screw top cans from automotive and industrial paint suppliers.
