Looking for info re: older OS Max engines
« on: May 07, 2020, 12:30:18 PM »
I have acquired an older OS .15 Max-III engine but it is lacking a needle valve assembly.  I found a number of different OS NVAs listed on da bay, but I haven't a clue as to which one might be appropriate for this engine.  If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the info.

TIA,

Jim Howell

There's a FB group called "Vintage FAI" free flight, owned by Abbotsford BC's Nigel Tarvin, who is near me and I have met. They have discussed the Max III .15 some and it was recently posted that the spraybar is (only) 3mm OD.

That makes it smaller than the FP .20 parts and right around 1/8" OD....measure the holes in the case to confirm that. I would guess that a .10FP spraybar/NV would fit, perhaps a .15FP, or there might be an Enya part that would work. I might ask Randy Smith if he has the parts you need...you never know!

FWIW, I'd make an offer on your Max III .15, if it's a good runner, in good shape, and you are considering selling it. There will locally be a special event for "Cranfield 10" designs from 1960 WC...ten competitors were declared "Joint Champions" in 1960, after all the prescribed flyoff rounds were complete and everybody maxed out. Pretty historic!  y1 Steve

Steve,

Got it and thanks for the reference.  I'll go see what I can find out there.

I'll keep your "FWIW" in mind if I get discouraged by this wild hair effort of mine.  I got this engine in hopes of trying Class A Nostalgia Free Flight.   Twenty years or so ago, I met a free flight oriented, internet mentor on another forum.  Over the years, he's urged me to try some power FF models - not the rubber and glider stuff I'd been messing with -  and come meet him at some event.  As we've both aged, he's gotten a bit more insistent.  And, to go along with that push, he's also pushed for me to get an OS .19 Max-III, or a .15 if I can't find one of the "rare as hens' teeth" .19's.  Wouldn't you know it!  Finally when I try to work up enough moxie to make some progress along these lines, we get to stay at home and try to stay sane.

Look in stunt hangar classified. I have some old OS .15 stuff I would like to sell. I'll get it listed this evening.

But only one needle valve -- I looked.

Jim, PM Randy Smith.  I asked him about exactly that.  He said something about needing to look through old stock, but hasn't gotten back to me.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

For FF use, you'd be better off using a bladder tank, no venturi restrictor and some sort of an injector with remote NV. A remote NV isn't one of my favorite things with suction feed, but with a bladder tank, the response is almost instantaneous, ending my objection. Works good with a Flood Off setup, as a bonus. The one for an OS .10FP is a desirable unit.  y1 Steve

The ENYA spray bars are all 4mm diameter. I have attached a dimensional picture of available spray bars and a listing of spray bar usage on ENYA engines.

If this helps ...

I have pages and pages of scanned parts lists, especially for Fox, OS and SuperTigre.

Hi Guy, there's a guy in Florida who goes by the name of shutterman in business and on the bay! His real name is Bobby Brooks and has many parts for Enyas as well as OS and others! his email address is: shutterman@aol.com and his phone number is 954-234-0863. I have dealt with him many times over the years and have found him to be an honorable and helpful dealer!

Thanks to all who took the time to reply.  I appreciate the replies and the info.  I have had a chat with Bob Mattes - thanks for the reference - and have joined the Vintage FAI group on FB.  Found some references there to Max- III NVAs so it appears that my situation is not an isolated situation.  Bob Mattes was not able to help with a possible NVA but was a good source of info on Max-III's.  I was able to scrounge a "generic" NVA from the Chief - thanks Ty - that seems to fit.  Haven't tried to run the engine with it, but will do so soon.  While I'm still looking around, I seem to have a cobbled-up work around.

Thanks,
Jim Howell
