Congratulations
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:16:43 AM »
I attended the Lee Ma Contest yesterday and watched as young Matt Colon flew to Second Place in his first outing as an Expert. His Grandfather took First. If matt makes it to the NATS look out, this youngster can fly.  Comngratulations Matt. To Perry Rose also congratulations for First Place in Intermediate.

Thanks Bill,

Actually I was 3rd in expert, and my grandfather beat me by 4 points (oh the humanity), and Dick Carville took first.

I'm glad I made the jump up, I felt like if I was going to stay in advanced I would just start sandbagging the class.

Edit:  I know Steve Teerlink took pictures during the meet (hint hint steve ;) )

Sorry matt, my bad. I got confused when writing them down yesterday. Grandpa got First in the Concours with his beautiful Thunderbolt. It was a real pleasure meeting and talking to you yesterday.

I can describe the weather in one word..........wet!!!!

Basically it rained throughout the one round contest except for a couple breaks in the weather, where it drizzled.

I had a 456.5, my grandfather had a 460.5 and Dick Carville had a 474, so I wasn't all that far back from the top spot.

Hey Steve,

You have to show up to see the scoreboard you slacker!

Dick Wolsey also flew Expert, but didn't make it into the money.

Norm Liversidge took 1st in Advanced with something like 440, with Jim Sumner in Second with about 406, followed by me with a 403 or so.
Bob Krug had engine problems otherwise I'd probably just have taken home only wet clothes and wet airplane.

I think the Intermediate Competitors were: Perry Rose,  Steve Teerlink, and Ray Johnson

The Novice class flyers were : Ray Kinsella, Ben Teerlink.

Sorry if I have the classes wrong Intermediate and Novice guys!

This was Ben Teerlink's first contest and he put up a good showing, especially considering the weather! Good job Ben!

I'm regretting I didn't bring a plane; I could have represented The Outlets!
Matt, Chris: Excellent Flying yesterday.
The contestants did an admirable job braving the elements and delivering a competition that was great to watch. Kudos to you guys!

thanks,  This was the first time I flew in the rain, and 10 years down the road, if I could only remember one flight with that plane, I would pick the rain flight!

Way to go, Matt! You've made great progress in a very short time. Seems like only yesterday you made your first post here as a beginner and already you could (obviously) outfly me. I'm going to be stuck in Advanced for quite some time.

I'm watching your stunt career with great earnest. Keep it up. #^

Thanks guys!

I believe when I first registered on the forum, I was barely an advanced flyer.  now over a year and a half later, I've reached expert!!!  I say that is progressing at a breakneck speed if I do say so myself!

I have noticed my whole mindset in terms of flying has changed.  I want to do more than go out for 3 flights a couple times a week.  I want to fly more, correct all my errors, and really start PRACTICING!!!!!

Your achievements look even more impressive to those that have seen you progress from the first contest as a Beginner. Just make sure you don't forget to have fun in all this "Correct all my errors" stuff.

That's right Steve, you've watched me from the very beginning, as has Bill Hummel and a couple others I think.  I remember my first beginner contest, Bill said that my flying was right where the intermediates were flying at.  1 year later I was an intermediate, by the end of that year, I decided to enter advanced.  I came in 5th at Brodak's with my Ares in 2009, and was starting to really become "good."  This year, with my first piped ship, a second place in advanced at Brodak's, and being told I could do well in expert, I decided to move myself up.

I started competing in 2007 as a beginner, 2008 was intermediate, 2009 and half of 2010 was advanced, and now from 2010 on will be expert!

Matt, that's so cool.  We'll need to work on getting you to the team trials.  Perhaps we could instigate a letter-writing campaign to your school principal to get him to postpone starting the school year until after Labor Day.

Young Matt, you are one of the few with the talent as well as having the support you have.  I imagine if you make the NATS and win, the school officials would probably give you time for the team trials.  I also imagine you  would not lack for funds either if needed.  Go for the once in a life time experience. #^

If Matt can make the team trials and get on the team, I think we should all send emails to his school as a petition for them to allow him to make the trip to represent us.

The school wouldn't care if I went, so long as I made up the work I missed.

Thanks Steve!!!  I must have been doing my horizontal 8s in the picture where my Oriental Plus is showing a little up elevator.  I can't imagine using that little elevator for a sharp corner like my Triangles.
