Completely Off Topic - Where do You Live?
« on: August 17, 2023, 09:28:28 AM »
COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC!  (Well, unless you're not a teenager anymore)

My wife and I moved from Minnesota to Wyoming a year ago, and love lots of things about Wyoming.  But we're both seniors, and medical care here is ... um, er, ah ... ok, if you don't mind waiting a couple of months to see most providers.  Not good when the aches and pains are daily.

So, for those willing to participate:

1) Where do you live?
2) What do you like about your location?
3) What don't you like?
4) How would you rate health care there, especially for seniors?

Thanks!

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I will play along:

1.  Linda and I live in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.  (About 20 minutes from downtown New Orleans as the crow flies)

2.  The food and Cajun culture is nice and the lack of cold weather is also nice.  However this summer has been brutal.

3.  I detest the traffic and New Orleans is turning into a sewer of crime due to liberal govt.  Get out of the city and it is conservative.

4.  Health care is a huge plus for Linda and I.  The Ochsner Health Care System is huge and we are fortunate to be located within just a few miles of any of their many facilities.  The older you get, as you well know, the more important this becomes.  We are extremely pleased with our doctors and access to health care here.

Hope you are well Dennis and we need to talk again soon.

Mike

Huntsville Alabama (actually Harvest AL a Huntsville suburb)
Likes:
Low crime, Low property tax, Housing boom, lots of water (fishing, boating, drinking). Really good medical care. Great control line flying sight.  Mostly good flying weather. NACA club.  https://www.facebook.com/nacacontrolline/
Don't like:
Due to fast growth roads aren't keeping up.  But so far it ain't too bad  epically if you are retired and can pick your time of day to go.
Come visit I will take you flying.

Santa CRuz, Californicaton (Thanks to Pretty boy Newsom) I was born and raised here.

Then, the (damned) UCSC came here and ruined our sleepy little retirement town. Now we are over run with crowded freeways and the gas prices here in SC are near $5 a gallon. ($4.57 to 5.29)

The weather is mild with low humidity most of the time. DON'T EVEN THINK OF MOVING HERE!

I go shopping early to avoid the crowds.

But, there's NO place to fly. All the school yards are all locked when school isn't in session. I have to drive 30-45 minutes just to fly a flight or two.

Cheers, Jerry

I live where Doc does.  Actually we are a burb on the west side (Kansas side) of the KC metro area.   It is said it is one of the few "livable" cities left.  The KC area has about everything you can think of;  A zillion restaurants including BBQ,  the Chiefs, Royals, Kansas Speedway, American Royal & Rodeo, two drag strips,  theme park, KC Zoo,  museums, the famous Country Club Plaza, four or five casinos,  big name concerts, etc.  Like most bigger cities there are surely neighborhoods and parts of town you would rather avoid.  On the other hand there are some of the best areas in the country and many outstanding medical facilities including Kansas University medical center,  a cancer research hospital,  and on the west side of town (the higher end community)  many of the finest medical specialists in every category.  The cost of living is lower than most major cities but if you can afford it you can have whatever you wish. Also the Lake of the Ozarks is a popular weekend getaway for many.
For a modeler the downsides are next to no hobby shops left in the city and the weather.  It is typical seasonal midwest with four full seasons.  We usually really get only about five fully flyable months a year with the rest sporadic.  Wind and cold temps make for us a long building season!  I try to get out to get a couple flights at least one day a month all year but sometimes that's just not feasable.  There is an Indoor FF club in the area with a couple flying sites so that's a decent winter option.

1. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

2. Edmonton is an affordable place to live.  Summers are generally nice and the Alberta Controlline Flying Club Field of Dreams is here.

3. Winters are a little too long for my liking. Crime seems to be increasing, but still not too bad. We certainly don't have mass shootings here! Importing hobby supplies from the US is quite costly, especially when sellers insist on using UPS.

4. Healthcare is pretty good here, although it can be hard to find a family doctor.  Waiting time for elective surgeries can be long, but you do have the option of paying private clinics for faster results.  Healthcare for seniors is free.  Everyone else has to pay insurance premiums, but that is not excessive and you still don't have to pay for hospital care or doctor visits.  Overall, I would say it's a pretty good system.

(1) I live in East Texas, just outside the very small town called Elkhart.. About 125 miles southeast of the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex. We have a ten acre plot of land, and we allow a local cattle rancher to graze his cattle on it.

(2) Due to the population of the area, jobs are few and far between. My wife and I are both retired, so we don't care about job availability. We live on a dead-end road so there is absolutely no "neighborhood traffic" to contend with.. Very peaceful with no nearby neighbors.. I have my own flying site that's part of my yard..

(3) Dislikes??? None that I can think of.

(4) I am a veteran so I get my healthcare through the VA.. I'd rate the quality of care at or very near excellent. There is a VA Clinic in the county seat about 7 - 8 miles away.. If specialized care is needed, the VA provides transportation to the VA hospital. The Dallas "medical community" has established local facilities in the area, so my wife is also well taken care of.

I live in a very small town ,Locust NC pop 3400 counting all the local ranches ,farmers. cow and a few cats. Only 40 miles east of Charlotte but a real farm community.  Even the tourist do not stop as we have no motels. Great place to live, if you like good weather, largest car show in NC once a month. Safe roads to road bike on.  No night life but one hour from Huntersville field. We are less than two hours to the mountains and five to the Atlantic. Not a lot of snow and summer is not bad compared to when I lived in Florida.
We do have doctors and two Hospitals only 20 miles away. Used house market is thin and rental are few.  We do have a police and fire department.

Tucson, AZ.

Good CL field, good RC fields. Good uncontrolled airports for flying little airplanes, super good ratio of flying days to non flying days. I have a pool and AC in the garage so summer is fine.

In the summer it gets hot so I have to get up early to go flying models or little airplanes, so I don't like that so much.

Tucson is a small city that is like a giant old folks home. They tore down a middle school with a playground big enough to have the Nats to build yet another medical center and medical strip mall next to it... so plenty of that stuff.

Chris...

I reside  in the wonderful little town (4500 or so) of Deer Park Washington.  Well, technically, we are about 4 miles outside of town, out in the country.

Likes: Extremely quiet.  We are 1/3 mile off a lightly traveled county road and most days the loudest thing we hear is the evening chorus when the coyotes start singing.  We have 12 acres of land, and as soon as I can get enough other projects out of the way, I have room to put in my own circle!  This fall should see some real progress on that front. And it has been beneficial to be only 20 minutes away from Paul's place.  The town is small, but has most everything we need, and if it isnt here, Spokane is only 20 miles away, including B&B Hobbies, which is the last genuine old school hobby shop in the region.

Dislikes: Not many! The biggest might just be the extra work load of owning property. There's always something that needs to be done.

Healthcare: Not a senior (yet), but we have a nice medical clinic here, there's a physical therapy clinic, dental care, etc, and as mentioned, Spokane is only a half hour drive away and has everything available.

I live in a small town, Manning, South Carolina. My requirements after retiring were to find an airpark/fly-in community away from large cities.
In 2007, through Trade-A-Plane, I found exactly what I wanted and bought lot number 37 on a private airpark just outside of Manning. See www.palmettoairplantation.com. Our turf runway is 3400 feet long and lighted for night operation.
I had a small home built with a detached 48 x 48 foot hanger, large enough for two airplanes, three cars, my machine shop, my golf cart and my boat.
Right across the taxiway, I have a very nice field for flying control line. No rules, no muffler requirements and nobody bothers me. All I have to do is mow it.
The town itself has a population of around 4,000, a few decent restaurants, five auto parts stores and a Walmart. There’s a Lowes and Harbor Freight around 25 minutes away and I can get to Columbia or Charleston in an hour and a half and to Florence is 40 minutes.
The crime rate although purported to be high does not seem so. Seems like any hardcore criminals tend to disappear. I should mention that there are a number of swamps around and most of them have a rather large alligator population. (!!)
But, it’s nice here. Our plantation is security gated with around 16 full-time residents.
I live alone and value my privacy.
A big perk: SC has GREAT gun laws. Go into an Ace hardware store, show your driver's licence, they check you out with the FBI. If you're clean, you fill out a short form, buy the gun(s) and ammo you want and walk out the door. CCP is very easy to obtain.
Bob Z.
