Title: Colossus
Post by: Randy Cuberly on January 22, 2018, 09:13:13 PM
Colossus, finally ready to fly!  Maybe tomorrow if I can get organized.  Having work done on house and may have to be here!

The biggest lesson I learned building and finishing this airplane is to be aware of things that can happen on a very extended build.  The build on this airplane stretched over 4 years.  A lot can happen in 4 years and when left for long periods of time one tends to forget what was done and what was not.  Several times I had to back up and do over because of getting ahead of some things on the build.  Next thing you know you look at it and say what the %$?&#@ blinkety blank did I do that for...DO OVER!  Had several of those!

I love building airplanes but despise painting and finishing.  I know it's a terrible flaw in my character.

Power is a RO Jett 61BSERE on a muffler.

Anyway here it is!

Beautiful job, Randy. The Colussos is a great example of how relative sizes are not all that meets the eye. It is a grand airplane, despite others of greater dimension. It has "that look." I-beamers are just so beautiful.

Hey Randy the plane looks great.   I too do not like the finishing process on planes.  Love to build also.  And Chief you should have my Jumbo to stand behind.  I think you could hide behind it.   H^^

My Contractor and a bunch of his workers were here all day today so I didn't get a chance to take the airplane to the field.

Probably tomorrow.

Thanks for all the kind words Guys.  They are very much appreciated.

Steve I will heed your words of wisdom and go easy with the trimming process.  I'm usually pretty good at trimming and always have the help of Mr. Bob Whitely to fall back on also.  Bob seem to have a sixth sense for knowing the right thing to do, if and when problems appear.

I know the CG is a bit far forward now and I will probably have to add a little tail weight but decided to simply wait till it's flown to determine how much.  It's and Old School Airplane with relatively small tail feathers so the CG may need to be a bit farther forward than everything I've flown for a long time!

Bench trimming showed it to be pretty good (except for the CG) so we'll see.  No shortage of power I think with the RO Jett 61, which to date has only been bench run for about 1/2 Gallon of fuel.

Great looking example Randy, and with enough time to get it trimmed for VSC?
