I use Dacron hinges cut from material I buy from Aircraft Spruce.  I use dope, either Nitrate or Butyrate.  Apply 3 good coats of dope to the balsa and then 3 more coats of dope over the hinges.  If they wrinkle, pass a heat gun over them easily and they will shrink down and become almost invisible when you paint over them.

Usually I apply straight dope (not thinned) for the first coat over the bare balsa, followed by at least two or three more coats of a 50/50 mixture of dope and thinner before I try to attach the hinges.

How long do you wait between coats?

How about hinges made out of Taffeta.
They should also be easy to apply with the above mentioned methods.

Dacron is the material that I could not remember, but that is it, just like Mike G said to apply...

Hi Cody,

I don't know that there is any specified time period to wait because the dope dries really quick.  I usually put a coat on, come back in an hour and put another one on,,etc etc,

I am doing other things in the shop while waiting for the dope to dry.  I can usually get all the hinges doped down in an afternoon.

I have used Goldberg Nylon reinforcement material for many many years! I cut strips of about 1.5 to 2" in length and bend them in half then clip these in a spring cloths pin so that they take a set. I apply these with alternating sets of three across the surfaces as indicated using pre-glued spots with old Ambroid or Sigment glues. I have had these in continuous service for over thirty years in some cases! In years past say 1967 through 1974 of so I used this method to hinge Goodyear Scale racers with no failures in any ever.
