I think you're on the bleeding edge. You're our pathfinder. What paint are you using?
The Polycrylic isn't fuel proof, and I don't think you'll be able to get the rattle-can paint under the hinges well enough that fuel won't get in there and turn it all to goo. I'm guessing, but I suspect that after some time you'll be able to just pull your elevator off, finding a gooey mess underneath.
I would paint the surfaces separately, and then stick the hinges on with the same rattle-can paint you're using to paint with. If you spray some paint into a cup or a fruit jar or some such then after it mostly finishes bubbling, you'll have paint that you can apply with a regular brush.
