« on: November 01, 2010, 10:22:40 AM »
Need a good cleaner for my Ultra Sonic Cleaner to clean my engine parts.  I was using the crock pot with anti freeze. But want something better. Any suggestions????

I have had good luck with Dawn dish detergent. I don't advise putting bearings or BB engines in ultra sonic cleaners as I have heard the bearings will vibrate and self destruct.  Dawn also makes a "Power Disolver" product that works pretty good on baked on castor without a crock-pot or ultra-sonic cleaner. I've found it at Walmart. 8)

Pete-
Watchmakers have been cleaning high dollar mechanical watches in the ultra sonic machines for many years. Based on this, I doubt that ultrasonic cleaning would be harmful to bearings. For cleaning solution, I would get watch cleaning solution from Borel in Kansas city. I had a machine but gave it to a neighbor who does clocks for a living.

Hi ,

ultrasonic cleaners may cause false brinnelling of bearings , if left for a long period of time in the us cleaner .

Just my two cents worth .

 Hi.

There are rarely ballbearings in mechanical watches. Basically only in the oscillating weight of some selfwinding watches.
Besides, watches are allways supposed to be fully dismantled for cleaning.
And, watch parts are so small and light in weight that they will not be damaged if they rub against each other in the cleaning baths. If the parts have a sensitive finish, they are washed separately to prevent scratching.
It really is not recommended to wash complete ball bearings in ultrasonic bath, unless you completely dis-assemble the bearing.

trichloroethane! do ya feel lucky?,  well do ya? no kidding its what we used at LMSC in the big version ultra-sonic parts cleaning tank. It does a wonderful job. Parts come out clean and dry no residue. I;d spray it with something like WD-40 right quick though because the steel parts will rust really fast. jim

I use the CLR Oil and Grease Remover (black bottle) in my u/s cleaner and have no hesitation cleaning ball races in there either because I simply can't imagine that the forces from the vibrations could possibly be enough to brinell a race. I mean, it's not like you're hitting it with a hammer :).

Thanks for the help with the ultrasonic cleaner.
Bought some Dawm Cleaner for the ultrasonic.  Also bought some Dawn- Power Cleaner to do the pre-cleaning before putting in the ultrasonic.
WORKED GREAT.  Will buy some CLR and try that out also.
Thanks Again

Jim (Ivy)...brings back memories.....we used to use those big u/s cleaners to clean teletype machines in the '60's.....cleaned 'em up great.....then we dipped them in 10wt oil and sprayed 'em with hot water to get off the excess. I remember if you turned the main shaft over before you oiled them up it would start breaking small part all over in the machine.
