T&L O.S. .40 in ARF Nobler???

       Hi All:

       While putting my C/L stuff in storage for the season today I got a brain storm.  I have an ARF Nobler that is already drilled for a LA .46. I also have  a T&L .40 that I have never started.  As a matter of fact, it has only been tested by Tom Lay when it wa built.  The T&L .40 looks like it Will be a perfect match for the Nobler.  The mounting holes and the cowl fit the T&L engine perfectly.

      Why not use the .40 in The Nobler? This is the T&L .40 that was made on an O.S .35S with a ST .46 p&c installed giving a .40 that will only 4 cycle and is quite light by today's standards.  It was made in Nov. 1977 and has been in my possesion almost since then.

      Any thoughts about this idea? Would the LA .40 be a better choice as it has about two times the horse power but is much more weight? I can always add lead to the tail for the LA! Lol

At first, I thought "sure", but then thought it deserves to be in a better plane than a NoblARF....unless you have completely upgraded the control system. If so, then u could look at it as a "test lab" and go for it with a clear conscience.

The other thought was "Why are you putting your planes away, when it's still summer?" We've got two more months of flying, and maybe more. I have flown up to Thanksgiving weekend on a regular basis. But then, we don't know where you are located. I'd like to see everybody add their town & state (or province) to their profiles. If we have an idea of where you are, we may be able to understand your setups, problems, advise, etc.  Steve

This is based on hearsay because I don't have a 35S. I've been told that the 35S is the same dimensions as the Brodak 40. My Brodak 40s are about 1/4" shorter than the LA 40/46 although the mounting bolt pattern is the same and the NVA is in about the same place.

According to one of the guys that helped develop the Brodak .40, it initially was intended to be a replacement for the OS .35S much as the Double Star .40 was a replacement for the Fox .35.

If memory serves (and maybe he will chime in to clarify), dad had the same engine--including the rework- in a green box Nobler many years ago.  Ran great up until it's rather unusual end.

Some purists will say not to put it in an ARF. We have an acronym in the Army Aviation community FIFI: Forget it, fly it (edited for young readers  )

i fly a nobler ARF (sometimes  ) on an OS40LA, and it has substantial power. My friend flys his noblarf with an OS25LA, and it does ok. I've never seen it do the pattern, but it does everything he wants it to. so, the TL .40 would be more than enough power. i personally would build a kit nobler or legacy for that sweet engine, but if that's what your thinking, its a good match.

    I do have a n.i.b. Green Box Nobler in the attic.  For some reason, I think that my building days are behind me.  I have at least 30 ready to fly planes in the attic and among them, are two Noblers.  Both of these are drilled for the O.S. .35S.

    I thought that I should at least try the T&L engine just to satisfy my curiosity.

Hey Steve, everyone that has seen any of my posts know where to find me.   Not that many years ago I would be out flying at least 3 or 4 times a month unless it was snowing/sleeting or a downpour.   John Bender and I flew when we had to watch our step because of the ice on the ground.   Anyway the ARF Nobler makes for a good test bed if you leave the plastic cowl off of it and rebalance the plane with each engine change.  Mine now sports an EVO .36 I'm still breaking in.   It started with a Fox 35 Stunt then a Brodak .40.

    Hi Steve:

     You asked why I was hanging upmy equipment for the season. I guess that it has to do with the fact that I will be away frm home for a month and when I return it will be Brd Season

      I have gotten in to pheasant hunting in the last thirty years and since I need the excerise, I will be doing that for the months of Oct.-Dec. I enjoy the walks in the fields with my faithful Pudelpointer at my side.  He too enjoys the thill of the chase!

      Throught my life,Ihave vacillated between guns and model airplanes!

       I will probably begin flying in April of 2015.

Frank...I remember well hiking the fence lines in the Palouse hills (SE WA) and the smell of Ely powder. Not too practical to drive that far for a shot or two. I hope you're closer than 5 hours to some good hunting. I may be going bass fishing this weekend for a short outting.
