CL Stunt Timers
« on: January 02, 2010, 01:31:46 PM »
Maybe wrong forum, but here goes anyway.  ???

Has anyone worked on making new, modifying FF or whatever a clockwork timer for fuel shutoff on a Cl Stunter?

This could be very helpful reference the 8 minute time limit. Have adequate fuel to not go into any overly lean laps, yet get it down before the time is up.

I have several dethermalizer timers including Seelig and Texas which I might play with for that option.

Comments welcome.

It has been done, but is not common. With a proper tank, it is not a real problem.  With a uniflow, the last lap or two before the fuel runs out will be rich, then the engine leans out and dies.  Having said that, I have seen a fair number of over runs, or premature shutoffs whilst judging stunt.  I think diddling with the needle is one cause.

I may adapt stunt electronic engine run timers to free flight.

People have done stuff like that but with 8 minutes for a pattern that takes around 5:45-6:00 (including 45 seconds of start and get to the handle time), it's not a critical problem. With a properly-designed tank, it will run exactly the same until it runs out. If I fly around at 5 feet in calm weather, my engine runs at a constant speed, then leans out and quits in less than 2 seconds. In the wind it will go up and down a bit for a few laps, at which point I cut it off with a cutoff loop.

It's really not even much of a problem with 7 minutes as in FAI. The big problems are on the front end, not the back end! Waste any time up front and then you have a problem. That's why you see so many more attempts in FAI - more than a few flips or even the slightest problem, you have to bail out of the flight. A timer wouldn't help much in that case.
