Title: CL model carrier
Post by: t michael jennings on March 16, 2007, 03:47:30 PM
Has anyone designed or build a good CL model carrier for a van?

I am looking for a carrier that will hold 2 or 3 models.

Is it a van full of seats, or an empty /cargo type van? Mini van or full sized?

Check with Allen Brickhaus.  I saw the method he uses and it looked great.  Used a sheet of 2 inch thick blue insulation foam with notches and the models are held on edge.  Holds several planes.

Michael,

Here is a plane carrier that has worked out superbly for me.   It's not my design....I originally saw it in a column by Bob Hunt.

I used a piece of the dense "pink foam"  (don't know the proper term for it ) that you can find at any home improvement store.    If you look closely, you can see that the height had to be increase about 6".  The seam would look better on the bottom.  You will have to experiment with the heigth of the carrier, and the depth of the slots, which are both dependant on the size of your planes.   There is a pair of "feet" made from 1" x 3" pine to stabilize the carrier.

In order to maintain the good appearance of my very expensive van, I took a color sample to the paint store, and had a quart of paint mixed that matches the interior of the van.

This carrier has the capacity of carrying 6 planes, but you can adjust the distance between slots to accommodate your needs.

It is well worth the time that it takes to fabricated the carrier....hanger rash will go to zero.

Cheers.

Newell,

The yellow plane is a "Viking" (check the tail graphics) which was built by Owen Richards (Ellenton, FL), and I flew it in Old Time for a while, and eventually sold it.   The plane in "bones" is the Southwick "Skylark".

Cheers.

This type of holder/carrier works well for non-piped ships. But I prefer to carry my piped stuff flat, on the landing gear. That way the oils, etc. from the pipe don't flood back into the engine. Just my thought. With enough egg crate soft foam you can "sandwich" a couple of ships...
