C/L in Florida
« on: March 08, 2007, 08:41:07 PM »
Hello,

Anyone know of any C/L clubs or just C/L flying in the Ft. Walton, Destin, Pensacola, Florida area?

My wife and I will be there (Ft. Walton) for a couple weeks visiting relatives.  Leaving here April 10.

Thought if there was any flying going on near these areas I could go have a look sometime while my wife and her sister were doing their stuff.  Should be a nice break from the cold and snow we've had here in WV.

Thanks,

Joe

Not sure if I ever saw anyone post from that part of Fl. You might want to bring a stunt kite and fly it on the windy beach. Some guys say get a long wood handle and replace the two handles. Almost like flying C/L? H^^

While not exactly C/L - if you are in Pensacola you should make time to go to the Naval Aviation Muesuem. I have not had a chance to get there yet, but have checked it out on-line. It would be a great way to pass an afternoon while the women are shopping. Wildcat, Hellcat,Bearcat and other great planes to look at and dream about.

I have to get up there- they are supposed to have a Martin AM-1 Mauler- the Able Mable. I have a C/L model of one from a Sturdi-Built kit that is about 1/2 done, and I want some pics before I start finishing it.

Doesn't look like there's much c/l flying going on in the Ft. Walton area.  I checked the AMA club list and the flying clubs (c/l & r/c) are too far south of Ft. Walton for me to be able to visit in the time I'll have available while we're in Florida.

I did visit the Naval Aviation Museum when I was in  Pensacola about 15 years ago.  I can go see that again.  Also, Eglin AFB is nearby.  Perhaps there will be something there to see.  My in-laws house is right beside a 20 acre lake that has some pretty good bass in it so I'll take along my fly rod.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Naval Air Station Museum in Pensacola and battleship in Mobile are both well worth the trip if you are into military aviation and hardware.  I've been to both places.  Loved it.  If you left Ft. Walton Beach early in the morning  and didn't linger to long you could probably do both in a day though you'd probably come away wishing you had more time.  At some times of the year the Blue Angels perform weekly (practice sessions) at Pensacola NAS and you can watch for free. They even have days when you can meet the pilots, but maybe not this time of year.  Check out their website.

The Blue angel's practice sessions are as good as their airshow, and  you get a good seat, closer to the runway!

Joe,
The North West Florida Modelers have a fairly new paved CL circle at the RC site out west of Pensacola--I think it is called Fitz Field or something similiar to that.
Check with the guys at Radio South in Pensacola for exact info/location.
